Aren't they great? I never cease to be impressed with the talent and imagination of my students, and some of these folks are barely 17.

Wow! Those are some great efforts! It's really interesting to see the diversity of style. Great assignment technique!

As you no doubt know, teaching has its frustrations, but really more rewards.

I'll try to post a couple of their illustrations done with Painter soon.

These kids are wonderful.

Not only are they accomplished, they've not lost the fearlessness little children bring to the world.

In addition to their varied and well done painting styles, each of these students' unique personalities shines through, from composed, mature, and beautiful Abigail to enthusiastic, humorous thumbs-up Joshua and all the kids in between... (I knew these personalities in high school way back when).

I love their portraits and love these kids too. No wonder you wanted to share their portraits with us, Stewart. You must be very proud of all of them.

Thanks!

I used to prep my art boards in gesso and than paint my illustrations over the gesso texture once it dried. After the Gouache dried I lightly used Prismacolor pencils on the top surface of the gesso (to bring out the gesso texture).

I just joined paintfactory.com tonight and also began using Painter 11 as well... I don't know a better way to begin using Painter 11 than reminiscing about the way I used to paint (only all digital now, thankfully). Thanks for the perfect timing of your tutorial. :)

All of your posts so far. I, as somewhat of a newbie, appreciate your tutorials, step-by-steps and hints greatly, thank you!

I also find it fascinating how conservative and stuck up some areas of the world are - take Croatia for example. The art academies here don't even mention digital arts - in fact, they would rather burn all the CDs with digital painting software before teach their usage, let alone accept and acknowledge its value. It's refreshing to see that digital art is appreciated and taught alongside traditional art in more developed and openminded countries.

Keep up the great work, looking forward to more posts from you!

Your awesome article helps reinforce that I can put away the 100% D'Arches watercolor paper.

I most sincerely hope you write an article about the need for formal Art education and why it really helps the aspiring artist- as well as the drawbacks.

Hope to see more of your work.

I think the best advantage to using the pen tool is that it is editable = you can go back and tweak the curves until they're just how you want them, but the damping trick does work pretty good.

As you said getting a "smooth decorative curl" is rather hard with even a large tablet and a steady hand. But Painter does have a setting that is a big help. Under "Brush Controls" "Spacing" 'Damping", set the Damping to a high number and it does wonders for drawing clean flowing lines.

Blogging is new for me as well and I've been poking around on this site for a few months trying to figure things out and find answers to my questions. So far, so good, and I'm happy to say none of it's been too difficult.
