Painter 12 introduces a new dab type called "Computed Circular".
This new dab type falls into the category of dab based brushes, which include these other dab types:
- Static Bristle
These are the brush types that render a sequence of images or "stamps", to create the stroke.
Painter already had a Circular dab type. However, you were limited to using preset profiles for your dab. You could not have precise control over the softness of the edges.
These examples show some of the preset profiles you could select for the Circular dab, and the sample dabs it would render.
With Painter 12, you can now choose the Computed Circular dab, and instead of using the preset profiles, this dab type allows you to create custom profiles based on the settings available in the Computed Dab panel.
Here are some sample dabs created with various settings:
As you can see, you can change the softness of the edges. You can also change the strength (opacity) of your profile, and this is reflected in the dab preview.
Note that Painter ignores whatever profile preset is selected when your brush is using the Computed Circular dab. Much like when you use the Static Bristle dab type.
This new dab type also supports settings from the Angle controls. You can squeeze and rotate the dab as you wish.
In fact, almost every brush setting that you can apply to the Circular dab type, you can also apply to Computed Circular. One exception is the Hard Media settings. For now you can't combine Hard Media settings with the Computed Circular dab.
Painter 12 shipped with 12 brushes using this new dab type, in various combinations with other features.

Just for fun, I created 2 new blender brushes using the Computed Circular dab type.

I made the edges really soft, and brought the dab opacity really low so that the strength of the blenders would also be pretty low. I made one of them use grain, and the other one ignore the paper grain.

As I was reading, I began to wonder if perhaps using CC would be helpful in my quest for a "non-overlap" RWC brush.
It stuck me particularly when I looked at the sample dabs because I began to wonder if it were the hardness of the brush (edge) that impacted the overlapping paint areas that I want to get rid of so I decided to do some playing and I'm pleased to report that using CC has been really helpful.
I created a new brush variant based on one of my custom RWC Wet Pencil variants and I've been able to eliminate the overlap areas when painting large areas in sections.
Here are the specs for the brush:
Dab Profile: Medium (although I also use Pointed)
Dab Type: Computed Circular (CC settings: Dab Opacity=100, Hardness=0)
SubCategory: Real Wet Buildup
Opacity: 35/Pressure (can vary to a higher value but with 35% one can glaze by painting on multiple layers, creating depth with no too dark overlapping areas when painting in sections)
Grain: 55/Random (also used Grain at 80%)
Size: 10-20/None (MinSize=75%, StepSize=100%)
Spacing: Default values & turned on Continuous Time Deposition
Angle: See Note Below
RWC (read top to bottom in RWC panel/palette display order): W=70, C=75, V=100, ER=0, SR=85, W=60, PU=0, R=100, FR=0, DR=85, G=0, A=270, F=0, AD & DD both checked, Ani=10
Angle is tricky. The initial variant for this brush was based on an "early" brush that was not quite ready for use--didn't realize that until "later". I had changed the Angle settings with Squeeze=100, Angle=0, Expression=None and yet there was still an angle when using the brush and the brush icon was weird looking.
Eventually, I went into the XML file for the RWC Wet Pencil custom brush variant looking for Angle settings and then I compared those settings to other brushes no Angle settings (as in, Angle is not a factor when using the brush).
I found the following Angle settings and modified them and my custom RWC Wet Pencil brush icon was now not impacted by Angle and I changed all my custom Wet Pencil variants the same way:
min-x-squeeze="1.0" (was 1.0)
min-y-squeeze="1.0" (was 0.25)
max-x-squeeze="1.0" (was 0.1)
max-y-squeeze="1.0" (was 0.1)
squeeze-log="2.0" (was 1.05)
What I don't know--and haven't yet gotten around to testing--is if the Angle "problem" is because I'd created these custom RWC Wet Pencil variants with that "early" brush.
Anyway...I'm quite pleased with this new "non-overlapping" custom RWC Wet Pencil brush using the Computed Circular dab type.
I'm using it now on a new painting using multiple layers and basically glazing with the brush starting with an opacity of 35%, adding a new layer and then (sometimes) upping the Opacity a bit--45%-55%--painting the same area again and it working quite nicely.
I have found that changing the Dab Profile from Medium to Pointed can create useful (for me) overlap but the overlap is basically a narrow "line" which is useful for this particular painting...
I'd be happy to send you the brush variant files if you'd like--let me know how to do that...

Decided I really should test the release version of RWC Wet Pencil's Angle settings.
Starting with the default RWC Wet Pencil, I changed the settings to match my custom Computed Circular RWC Wet Pencil variant brush and did a Save Variant.
I opened the painting I've been working on with my custom cc brush variant which by the way, has clone color turned on--forgot to mention that in my last post. Using the newly saved RWC variant and on a new layer, I painted in the same area I'd used my custom cc variant. The resulting strokes with the newly saved variant were unlike my custom cc variant strokes in that there was a distinct overlap line between painted sections.
I took a look at the xml code for each brush--my custom cc and the newly saved variant--and the only difference was in those "squeeze" settings I noted in my last post.
I changed the newly saved RWC variant's xml code "squeeze" settings to the values I noted in my last post and saved the xml file--I deleted the c_.xml file for this brush variant in the USER area's RWC brush category folder.
I opened Painter again, opened the painting I'd been working on, added a new layer and painted with the modified newly saved RWC variant and bingo! the stroke result was identical to my custom cc variant.
Before changing the xml file "squeeze" settings, the Squeeze option on the Angle panel/palette is greyed out. After changing the xml "squeeze" settings, the Squeeze option on the Angle panel/palette was now available.
Until working with these RWC Wet Pencil variants, I'd never mucked with the Angle/Squeeze settings so I don't really know what the values in the "squeeze" setting in the xml file really mean/do.
Anyway, hope this proves useful...

For now, I can tell you that Angle and Hard Media are supposed to be mutually exclusive options. Meaning that if you use Angle, Hard Media (squeeze etc.) should not be used, and vice-versa.

Ok...but, if I choose "None" for Angle Expression then shouldn't the Squeeze option become available in the Angle panel/palette? Also, I changed the Dab Profile from "Pencil" to "Medium"/"Pointed"/"WC Brush--played with all of them--so that, combined with Angle > "None" should have (???) allowed access to Squeeze on the Angle panel/palette?
As I mentioned, I've never mucked with Angle so it was only because of the oddity with the RWC Wet Pencil brush maintaining Angle settings when Expression was set to "None" that I began to investigate more closely eventually taking a look at the xml file and comparing it to other brushes' xml files.

That's another one I've never played with at all...I'm most curious to see what the rake is like...
