Immediate Painter crash on vista 64 bit computer

I just bought a new dell system with fast everything and lots of ram utilized by vista 64 bit OS.

I was excited to use Painter in a much nicer environment.

After installing 9.5, it crashed immediately upon startup.  I did a little looking online and heard that v10 is supposed to work better with vista.
I just tried to download the latest trial of version 10 from the website and that also crashes immediately upon startup.  Most of what I read seems to show a problem on mac running leopard but this is a windows system.

I tried to hold down the shift key upon launch but it still crashed before loading.

    Any thoughts or suggestions?

    HI mukherjeeprem,

    Welcome to The PainterFactory!

I can't give you much help except to ask how much RAM you have. I believe the top limit Corel Painter current versions can use/work with is 8 GB.

Please check that with others, especially Wendy from Corel as I may be wrong. Hopefully she'll see this post and be able to respond.

Good luck, and a very Happy New Year 2009!

I have 12 GB of ram.  I would hope that painter would use the 4 that it's able to and not crash on more than that??
I'm not sure what else to try.  I've tried to uninstall and reinstall but that didn't work.

    That may be the problem.

One would hope Painter could use the 8 GB and ignore the other GB it can't use. However, I'm not sure it can do that.

Again, I think you'll need some help from Wendy at Corel who reads these threads and when she can, responds to them. Hopefully Wendy will see this thread after the holidays are over and she's back to work again.

Wish I could be more help!

Jinny is right... Painter can't run on a system that has more than 8 Gb of RAM.  There is a thread here:

    http://painterfactory.com/forums/p/867/2986.aspx#2986

that discusses the problem and has a possible workaround by editing boot.ini.

Sorry I can't be of more help - please let us know if the workaround works for you.

Re: Immediate Painter crash on vista 64 bit computer

I know Painter X runs fine on Vista 64 because I use Visa Ultimate 64 and I have 8 GB or RAM.  I have read threads about it not running on more than 8 GB though.  This does not make a bit of sense to me.  It is something that I would have thought Corel would have fixed and patched immediately.

Anyway, I would try removing some of the RAM and trying it out.  You will probably run just fine.

    ugh...what a bust!  that's ridiculous!!

i don't think it's an option for me to remove ram because i have 6 DIMM slots and they're each filled with a 2 GB card.  I think the only way to lower the ram would be remove 4 of the 6 cards and replace them with 1 GB cards.  That's not acceptable.

    Stupid Corel!!

Re: Immediate Painter crash on vista 64 bit computer

As a test you should be able to remove half the memory.  You have not stated what CPU you have, but if you have a new i7 then it can run either dual channel or for better performance tri-channel.  That means having three slots filled (have to check in your manual as to which ones, or call Dell).  All six slots do not need to be filled.  If it is a tri=channel (i.e. i7 CPU) then it probably would not run correctly with 4 chips replaced by 4 1xGB chips.  There should be no reason why it can not run on just three chips however (6 GB RAM).

I would guess that you have a new i7 CPU because you have six slots.  Normally a motherboard for a Core 2 Duo CPU has only four slots.

6 GB of RAM should work outstanding BTW, but I know how it is, you have 12 so you want to use all 12 :)...

Re: Immediate Painter crash on vista 64 bit computer

    Randy,

    I have a dell studio xps 435MT
    Intel Core i7-920 processor(8MB L2 Cache 2.66GHz)
    12GB DDR3 SDRAM AT 1066MHZ

According to crucial.com, it says the memory needs to be installed in pairs.
There are 6 dimm slots and Dell gives the option to buy the computer with either 4, 8, or 12 GB.  I couldn't figure out how that was configured online so I called Dell and the sales guy couldn't tell me either and after having me on hold for a long time, he was not able to figure out the answer.

Based on the quantity of dimm slots, the amount of ram that was being sold and the fact that everything needs to be paird, I would think that all the dimms need to be filled and that they are mixing 2 GB and 1 GB chips.   I'm not sure where else I can look to know which ones I can take out?

Re: Immediate Painter crash on vista 64 bit computer

The websites are not always up to date on their information.  I just checked and your model is not specifically listed on the Crucial website.

Until NOW (like in last month or two) the best you could get was Dual Channel memory, and dual channel motherboards.  All performance systems used dual channel and the memory would be used in matching pairs.  All memory was not always dual channel.  Times change and technology moves forward.

The new Intel i7 CPUs are the FIRST EVER TRI Channel memory, and for performance the memory is installed in THREE matching chips.  For that matter this is the first time ever that Intel put the memory controller on the CPU itself instead of the Northbridge chip (AMD has done this for a couple of years).

Do you really truly believe that the Dell rep has a clue of how this stuff works; seriously?

Check out this article to understand a little bit more about how your new CPU works. i7 CPU

Check out my web site here.

    Hi Randy,
This is my system on the crucial site:
    http://www.crucial.com/store/ListParts.aspx?model=Studio%20XPS

I know that the dell rep had no idea which is why he couldn't give me the info I was asking for.
Problem is...I still don't know the answer or know which chips I should remove to test it out.

Re: Immediate Painter crash on vista 64 bit computer

As it states in the link the memory is

  • Slots:   6 (2 banks of 3)
  • Standard Memory:   3072 to 6144MB removable
  • Which means that the memory should be inserted in threes, bank 1 and bank 2.  The booklet that came with your system should point out the banks of memory.  One thing I would look for is if three slots are one color and three are the another color than they are probably bank 1 and bank 2.  It probably would not matter which is which, but check your manual since Dell uses their own non-standard motherboards and I would not wnat to give you incorrect information.

Re: Immediate Painter crash on vista 64 bit computer

    All,

I would just like to mention that it is not neccessary to remove memory to launch Painter with more than 8GB ram.

There is an application I've used called EasyBCD that allows you to create a new boot configuration that will launch Vista with less memory. EasyBCD has good docs, although there is a last step needed due to a bug in the current version of BCDEdit. It is described here.

What you end up with is a screen that allows you to choose between 2 startup modes: a full memory and reduced memory mode. This is the WindowsXP analogy to editing the boot.ini file, only Vista doesn't have one.

Anyway, until this is fixed by Corel, this at least works.

    Hi eludwig,

    Welcome to The PainterFactory!

Thanks for the info. I'll be interested to see how this works for members with more RAM than Corel Painter can (currently) handle.

    Cheers!

Re: Immediate Painter crash on vista 64 bit computer

Here's a quote from one of Corel's people who I met at Imaging USA.

Ok, so after further investigation, it looks like there is no current patch or workaround for
Painter 9.5 nor Painter X to be able to work with more than 8GB of RAM (unless you pull
out our memory from your pc... which is crazy, I know.

However, the next version of Painter does not have this problem, which is, again,
    rumoured to be out soon.

Many apologies, but hoping that you'll be willing to try the new version when it's out.
