    Painter X crashes with 64 bit/12GB

    Hi Guys

This subject is probably in the forums somewhere, so my apologies for going over the same thing.

I have been using X for some time now, though I have just had a new PC machine built. (OS. Vista Ultimate 64 bit with 12GB ram.)

I installed X on this machine tonight though it comes up with the infamous "The programme has encountered a problem and needs to close"

I haven't yet been able to connect this new machine to the net, and so I haven't updated it to X.1. Will this make a difference?

Or is X unable to operate with my new OS?

Do I need 11 to get past this issue, though it scares me of how many problems it is incurring!

Thank you for your help with this matter.

    Kind regards

    Phil

Nope, it won't make a difference.  I believe your problem is how much RAM you've got installed.  Painter X apparently won't work with more than 8GB installed.  Painter 11 from what I've heard has overcome this problem.

The only way to get X to work on your current system is to either uninstall the extra RAM, which would be a pain, or I believe for Visa 64 users, people have previously suggested a program called EasyBCD in this thread here, that allows you to create a new boot configuration that will launch Vista with less memory (which while it ain't great it's better than actually pulling out the RAM).  I haven't used it myself so can't vouch for it.

Yes and no, Fes. Painter 11 will work fine on windows 64 bit with more than 8GB of ram, but it still only USES 2 GB ram.

I forget which Painter forum I read this on, but I am almost sure that it was someone from Corel that said this.  Can someone from Corel please confirm this?  Thanks

Thanks, I knew I'd seen it somewhere.  Sure would be nice to have a photographic memory at times like these! :-)

    Cheers

    Thanks Doug/Runique

I did know it only used a certain amount of RAM (but since I couldn't remember the exact amount I thought I wouldn't say - also since the question was why wasn't v.X opening, not how much RAM it could use I omitted that bit).  At least Painter 11 will at least open if you have more than 8gb now.  ;)

    Cheers!

I'm accutely aware of this ram issue. I bought Vista 64bit in anticipation of Painter 11 being able to use more ram on 64 bit.  So this is a major disappointment. I'm just glad I stuck with 8GB of ram for now and didn't rush out and get 16GB. Vista 64 is nice and very stable, but not much point in maxing out the ram.

    Cheers

    Re: Painter X crashes with 64 bit/12GB

Thanks to all of you for replies...much appreciated.

So it looks like I have to get 11 with all of it's absurd faults that I have been reading about! Not to mention it only using 2gb of 12...what a waste!

I know it has been said time and time over again on this and many other forums...why the HELL didn't Corel make 11 compatiable with modern configurations???? It is after all 2009!!! It's not as if 64bit came out last week!!

I work like most other digital artist with Photoshop. My new machine operates CS4 like the speed of light..... AWESOME!

I love Painter, though I look forward to the day that Adobe comes out with a rival programme (from what I have been reading it might not be to far off).

    Thanks again

    Phil
