    Adding Your Avatar, Step-by-step Instructions

     To add your avatar:

    1. Create a JPG or GIF image that's no larger than 80 x 80 pixels (or 80 pixels is the largest dimension... mine happens to be 77pixels wide x 79 high).

    2. Log in to The Painter Factory and in the upper right corner of the page, click the Edit Profile link.

    3. Below your name, you'll see several tabs. Click the Avatar tab.

    4. To the right of the words Enable Avatar, click the Yes radio button.

    5. To the right of the words Upload Avatar, click the Browse button.

    6. Navigate to the location on your hard drive where your avatar file is located.

    7. Highlight your avatar file name and click the Open button.

    8. When the path to your avatar file appears in the Upload Avatar field (rectangle to the right of the words Upload Avatar), click the Update button to upload the file to The Painter Factory server.

Now your avatar should appear in your Profile to the left of your name. It should also now appear in the upper left corner of any messages you post in the Painter Discussions forums.

Let me know if this works for you or, if you have any trouble, let me know and I'll see what can do to help.

    Hi jinny,

I am wondering why my avatar appears blurry when it is posted.

I have followed the requirements to the letter, this is the only site that has given me such a result, strange too as painter is all about images.

    Any tips on this?

    Hi Chucky,

On other sites, is your avatar larger than a maximum of 80 x 80 pixels? If so, that may be why it's not blurry there and is blurry here.

In other words, if you have to resize the avatar to fit the required maximum dimensions here at The PainterFactory, then save the JPG again, both reducing the size and saving again could result in lower visual quality (i.e. blurriness).

If you have the original image at a larger size, so you can save directly from that file, try resizing it to max 80 x 80 pixels, sharpen the image a little, then save it in GIF format to avoid JPG's "lossy" compression. Since the image is all flat areas of color, GIF format should work just fine.

In Painter, to sharpen the reduced size image, use Effects > Focus > Sharpen and adjust the Highlight and Shadows sliders as needed. I usually try 50% for both sliders and if that's too much, I use Undo, then adjust the two sliders lower.

    Cheers!

Thanks for your reply Jinny ,

Hmmmm, strange the  jpg was at 100% quality and looks reat at 80x80 on my screen before uploading. I will try a gif, pity it can't be animated as the avatar is designed as an animated gif.

    Thanks again.
