    Mazen ArRammal:

    1. Fixing Escape key functionality to dismiss windows and dialog boxes instead of inserting some symbol within any text fields.

Same thing happen when I use TAB key. Instead of jumping to the next text field (as expected), it actually insert tabulator character in it. Text tool behave very similar and, what's even worst, interfere with program hotkey's.

    Re: Painter Wish List

I'm using Painter X and my wishes for the next version of Painter are:

     1.  Mixer palette, could it be made to expand to open at a desired size.

    2.  Toolbox could be either square or oblong.

    3. Brush Creator could remain open whilst working so the scratch pad is accessible.  I know we have Brush Controls, but the Brush Creator always open behind  to use would be great.

    4. Scripts, Looks etc....... too buggy.  Even after completely uninstalling/reinstalling - doing a registry cleaner, scripts and Looks etc. don't work correctly.

    5. Painter to be more stable and not close down so often.

    6. Paint should be able to access all formats including .png as it is now, this is one format it will not read.

I'm sure there's more I could come up with, but for now......this is it.

    Hi Maureen,

Great feedback. BTW the shut downs, do you have an insight you can provide me as to what and when Painter closes down so often??

    Maureen,

Happily, we can already do that. To toggle through open images and toggle between the normal Painter interface and the Brush Creator interface, use:

    MacCommand+Tab.

    Windows - Ctrl+Tab

Jinny, when I click Alt+Tab it doesn't permit me to toggle back and forth to painter/brush creator, instead a small box opens that toggles me through documents I have open on my desktop only.

Brush Creator can only remain open within the window of Painter.  Unlike other palettes, that can be moved to another part of the screen, or in my case a different monitor window.  It would be good if Brush Creator did the same thing.

    Hi Rob

Thanks for your reply.  To answer your question is a little difficult as shutdowns are rather random.  Most often it's when I'm doing selections or a very large file.

I have just recently completely uninstalled/reinstalled......a really good clean out of the registry too.  Keeping my fingers xx that it remains stable for me now.

Although, reinstalling hasn't improved the use of Looks, scripts.

    I have Windows XP SP3

2GB RAM  (maybe I now need more!)

Hi, My name is Luis Diaz and one of the things I wish Painter would do in Liquid Inks are the examples below. Now any good photo-manipulator and copy this or the idea of it. I'm talking about making Painter naturally cause all the randomness of a paint splash. Like Jackson Pollock or a pre-school kid. Also the ability to let the drips follow your hand (wacom pen). Almost like pulling off a painter's tape but the opposite where it would follow you (kind off like the rubber band option in PS3 in the pen tool). Also if you want to through water on it and let it bleed down. These things would be an incredible thing to accomplish. Another tool on it's own I would say. Maybe even the ability to affect oils like you might be able to change from water to turpentine. Anyways I'm in love with Painter and those are my ideas for an improved version. Re: Painter Wish List

    hi guys, Hector again:

It seems we are all largely in agreement that we don't want new bells & whistles, we just want what is already in Painter to work properly. I don't imagine Painter will ever totally replace PS, and I don't want it to try to be PS; let PS do what it does best, and let Painter do what it does best (natural media). I am content switching between PS and Painter when the task at hand requires it, but as DocPixel alluded, Painter could do a lot more to make the round trip easier to take, as opposed to locking the user out when trying to come back to Painter after doing something in PS.

To that effect, fixing the following would allow us to keep coming back:

When opening a complex, layered file in Painter after working in PS, I will often (usually) get the following message: "Unsupported Effects / Adjustment Layers have been Detected. Click OK to open image without effects"

The problem is that this message is utterly useless in its lack of specificity. I will get the exact same message whether I have an unsupported layer compositing method (Pin Light, Linear Light, etc.), an unrasterized Shape Layer (why these cannot be supported is beyond me), a Vector mask, a Layer Filter, etc. If Painter could specify what it is that it cannot support "i.e. The File contains an unsupported compositing layer mode: [Pin Light]", then I could go back and flatten some layers, or whatever. As it is, it causes me to waste a lot of time trying to guess what the problem might be. And I said before, more and more of the time I say "screw it, let's just finish it all in PS". And this, I believe, causes Painter attrition, when we find ourselves frustrated with Painter's lack of cooperation with our workflow.

So, if you can't make Painter 100% compatible with PS (which I don't realistically ever expect), then please replace that message with something that provides us with specifics about the incompatible feature, so the user can address it and come back to Painter.

    Again, thanks for listening.

You're absolutely right! I've corrected my previous message and will give you the correction here as well:

    Mac - Option Command+Tab.

    Windows - Alt Ctrl+Tab

Sorry about the mistake, one of a few I've made lately, pushing myself beyond reasonable limits and in serious need of sleep. Embarrassing, but true.

Thanks for letting me know and please always feel free to tell me if something I write doesn't work or just doesn't make sense.

    Re: Painter Wish List

    Hello beautiful Painter people:

More Painter bug fixes / wish list features while I am thinking of the:

    • Please add the ability to Command Click on the file's name on the title bar to be able to see and navigate up the file path. This has been a standard feature in just about all other Mac OS software and its absence in Painter has always frustrated me.

    • When Selecting SAVE AS for a file, Painter defaults to the folder where the last Painter session saved files to, not the folder where the current working file is actually located. Again, this is counter intuitive and not standard procedure, at least for Mac OS Apps. Save As should automatically take you to the same folder your current file is located. This is a big deal for comics artists and people who may be juggling dozens of files in the space of a couple days. Too often I end up saving files in the wrong folders. Again, little bugs, or features that don't work as we expect them to.

    Thanks again for listening.

    Re: Painter Wish List

     Hello again!

Here are some more of my ideas:

    1. Add a hotkey for cycling through few last used brushes/tools (maybe something similar like apps switching in Windows)

    2. Same thing for tools groups in Toolbox. Assign each group to ONE hotkey which will cycle them through (just like in PS). It's simpler, more effective and You'll save some hotkeys for other commands.

    3. Add 'Create Project' feature, so all files and settings could be stored in one, project specific folder, with categorized subfolders in it (i.e. palettes, masks, images, paths, workspace).

    4. Move 'Open template' command from 'Welcome' screen to 'File -> New' window, and let save templates without creating new image.

    5. Add n-way pop-up menus for quick access to larger number of tools/settings (Autodesk Maya style).

    6. In 'Layout Grid' let user to set the grid aspect ratio as Image Relative or Grid Relative.

    7. Add 'Default' button in Papers palette, for quick settings reset.

    8. Make Painter to actually remember what type of 'Color Info' mode was used recently - RGB or HSV.

    9. In some effects make the preview window size and zoom ratio adjustable by user.

    10. Give users simple way to create their own UI skins (after all we're artists, right?!).

    11. Add automatic check for updates.

    12. Add nVidia CUDA support.

    13. Add ability to paint 3D objects directly in Painter.

    14. Let Painter to create each image as independent process, which (when unstable) user can kill to prevent everything else from crashing (like in Google Chrome browser).

    15. Change Painter architecture to more modular (take example from new XSI and ICE technology), so You can fix bugs quicker and update program more often.

    UPDATE

    16. Add subdivision lines in Grid Layout and ability to save active grid as a layer (or even better - make it a dynamic layer).

    17. Add stand-alone viewer/converter for RIFF files.

    18. Add ability to select multiple numeric input fields (with SHIFT and CTRL key) to quickly enter the same value in all of them (just like in Autodesk Maya Channel Box),

    19. Add ability to change numeric values by holding CTRL modifier, mouse button and moving a mouse left or right:
    - LMB - slow speed,
    - RMB - normal speed,
    - MMB - fast speed
(just like in Autodesk Maya Attribute Editor).

    That's it for now.

    See ya!

    Re: Painter Wish List

    Hello everyone.

This is my first post here, although I've been using painter since I got my first free copy of PAINTER 3D, That's right  Ros To  ...3D!

Unfortunately even though I have kept that little disc even when I updated my new versions of painter, it will no longer work on the new operating systems. :( I just get the inexplainable error message -- "not enough free memory to run painter 3d"--  strange the machines I have tried to run it own are enormously faster, slicker and beefed up compared to what I used to run it on.

I miss the old days when I could open up a 3d model directly into painter and go to work on all the layers.. colou,r bump, transparency, and various lighting related layers.

I have to agree strongly with the pixel doctor after reading this thread.

    What happened, Corel?

Why have you so neglected Painter? I am still sitting on version IX and I will not upgrade until PNG support is implemented and better export of alpha dependent images.

The alpha support in Painter is sorely lacking, which is a definite pain for me as I use Painter professionally everyday for just the purposes it is intended.

Even though the ability to create images is outstanding, why do we have to jump through so many hoops to export to targa, tiff and others?

How ironic that I have to export as a PSD then open up in (cough) the gimp ( a free program too) or some other painting/image  program just to save my png's and tiffs.

Why has the animation feature languished in a state of moribund putrescence?

Why can't we preview thumbnails in our operating systems (I just installed the painter thumnail view BTW but still am resorting so always saving a jpg next to the painter file).

I also can't understand why using the great plugins that came with painter KPT etc will cause Painter to crash violently if I try to use a saved preset. In fact saving brushes and libraries or any preset at all is buggy, difficult or completely crash prone.I am constantly lamenting the loss of my carefully made and often used brush presets.

I love painter and often insist on employers buying it and I recommend it to everyone over PS for digital creating images, but they haven't moved with the times and Corel have really taken for granted their customers loyalty by laclustre and way too pricey upgrades.

    My wish list is simple.

    Improve importing and exporting -SUBSTANTIALLY

    Fix the animation function.

    Make the product stable

For the love of the digital art gods bring back 3D! Don't give us excuses about who owns what and who bought whoever, just be realistic about the purposes af digital media, Corel might actually make a buck out of the product if they do.

I hate to be starting out on such an apparently negative vibe, don't get me wrong, I have painter IX open right now and I wouldn't know what to do if it was gone.

That said, go easy Corel, on the upgrade price, initial spend is one thing I don't think we mind coughing up for such a great program, but unless you make some real advancements your customers may take a very dim view of so your called upgrades and I for one will keep my very hard earned dollars for other more derserving companies.

Did I say Maxxon earlier? Bodypaint looks mighty good.

Oh yes, and on a more coommunity freindly note, there's been a lot of questions regarding layer palette resizing. That's a tricky trick, what you have to do is grab the layer palette by the scruff and rip it off from the channels palette, it won't resize when there are stiched together as the ui defaults to. Once the layer palette is on it's lonesome then you can grab it by the ankles a stretch it down as long as you like. I know this is kinda' obscure, but it does work. One of the little crypticisms of the painter ui. ;)

Hope to be arround here a little more in future, with some better things to say.... bring on the new improved Painter Corel, we love this little program...  :)

    Hi Chucky,

    Welcome to the factory!

I am going to give you a very hoonest answer about Painter 3D... it's one I have not been asked about in a while. In all fairness it is very old code and it has more to do with that than who owns it. It's been a very long time since anyone has looked at it or even asked me about it. With awesome products like zBrush and Mubbox I dont know if the development investment would make sense. However if there was a huge swell of support I guess never say never...!?

As for the feature improvements, stability and file support, these are all top proioities for the next version. Keep the posts coming we always like to hear from you.
