    Arshes Nei,

I've edited your message above to make the URL to the other thread a hot link. If you don't know how to do that, read this thread in the PainterFactory Help forum:

     Thank you Jin.

I have an interesting wishlist suggestion. I'd love if there was a way to make a "Classic Version" of Painter with network mode. It would be similar to Open Canvas, and it seems a shame that such a program was never continued with network ability to paint with other people. The way the digital age is going, I think if Corel/Painter picked up on this kind of thing it can really bring a lot of people together to share works in new ways, it just seems like a natural step in the way the internet is going.

While I know you can record yourself and post it on networking sites like youtube, there is just something more fun in seeing it live with a small chat window, and the ability to participate.

    Jinny,

Thanks.  This is a big help.  Easier than what I was doing.

    Hi,

Since, in the paragraph quoted above,  you say ".... was never continued with...", it sounds like you already know older Painter versions included the Net Painter feature to allow online collaborative painting sessions with two or more participants.

The earliest Painter version I have installed that includes Net Painter is Fractal Design Painter 5. The last version that included Net Painter was procreate Painter 7.

I used it for several months, painting two or three times a week with an art instructor and his students in a high school in Ohio (I'm in California). It was lots of fun for all, when we could keep the connection going, that is.

Unfortunately, Net Painter wasn't as popular as one might expect and back in those days, with slow connections and broken connections, it wasn't possible to count on having an uninterrupted and relaxing painting session. When we did, it was great!

There are a couple of pages still on my PixelAlley server from the days when I had a dedicated Net Painter section to record what we did using Net Painter, with permission from all participants, including some of our collaborative paintings. When we suddenly stopped meeting to paint together (with no explanation from the art instructor), I removed all of the collaborative paintings since it didn't seem appropriate to continue having them published on my website.

These two pages show and explain a little about how Net Painter looked in Painter 6 and how it worked:

The way the digital age is going, I think if Corel/Painter picked up on this kind of thing it can really bring a lot of people together to share works in new ways, it just seems like a natural step in the way the internet is going.

I guess it's worth a try, asking Corel to bring back Net Painter, but since it would probably require a good deal of programming to bring it into the newest Painter version, I wouldn't count on it happening. Also, along with everything else in the digital age, we now have serious problems with viruses, worms, trojans, and the "bad guys" who would love to have an open door to our computers in order to steal whatever they want, including but not limited to our identities. Though I don't know this to be the case, it seems like connecting directly to one participant's computer might open up all kinds of problems related to the above.

While I know you can record yourself and post it on networking sites like youtube, there is just something more fun in seeing it live with a small chat window, and the ability to participate.

Yes, it was fun doing that with Net Painter!

    Hi Suchin,

I'm going to ask that you please quote just the pertinent text from the post you're responding to so we'll have an idea what your response is about.

Otherwise, we may need to go back and read the posts on more than one page of the thread in order to figure out what you're talking about.

    Thanks!

Jin, thank you for this information. From what you're describing I can see why it would have a lot of problems working. I think if they just made a small stand-alone version which was separate from trying to get the same version and patching it to match another user, it could work. A very stripped down version where it's more like Painter Classic could cut down on programming issues. I'd certainly purchase it if it was out on the market.

    Arshes Nei,

I'm not a programmer, far from it, so what I say is only based on guesses. I do know that Painter has changed a lot since Painter 7 and it only makes sense (to me) that would impact bringing back old programming.like Net Painter into a new program, maybe make it impossible.

You might be right about a stripped down, dedicated online collaborative painting software, and if it ran smoothly and didn't introduce security issues, maybe more people would be interested in buying and using it.

Can't hurt to make the suggestion.!

The animation feature for Painter X is broken. I'm taking some animation courses in community college and Painter does not respond well at all. It crashes all the time and incredibly buggy.

    It definately needs an overhaul.

I played with it briefly, and I thought it was me. My plate is too full to take on another whole art form so I just didn't try it again. I followed the manual and couldn't get it to do what the manual says.

    Hi Katfalls,

You can set canvas size in any units you like, and any pixels per unit.  When opening Painter, in the "Create a new document" in the Welcome screen, you get a popup that lets you use any unit you desire in the dropdowns.  This is the same window you get using File>New on the menu bar.

    Hi Kathy,

I've posted a new thread under Education and Learning, in the Tips & Tricks forum, named:

Kaleidoscope Dimensions, an Easy Way to Decide in Advance

Take a look to see if it might help you until Corel can give us the option to use Inches or Pixels when creating a Kaleidoscope Layer.

    Cheers!

    Re: Painter Wish List

Here's my wish of sorts. I have PS6 essentials and its got a new interface with guided, quick and full edits. Id love to have a program like PainterX have "steps". That is to say, basic, intermediate and full create/edit ability. In basic mode, youd get some brushes, canvases/papers and palletes. In intermediate you'd have easy acsess to more functions, but still very clear, intuitive and straightforward, and full would be as it is now.

I say this because Im an artist of over 20 years for a living who is new to Painter, having come from more simple programs and mostly traditional media. Id love for someone like my dad to use this program, becasue of what if can do, but I know that he wouldnt have the time or patience or computer ability to learn all the backdoor methods and shortcuts that are needed to get the program doing the work he does traditionally. Id also have an 11 year old neice who really enjoys art, but again..its too complex a program. The variety of paints and /pens brushes this program has would be faboulous to expose people to in a more intuitive and straightforward way. I love that you can do so much with this program, but Ive hit walls..had to buy books..watch tutorials and such to pick things up. Ive made some great stuff too..and Id love to be able to get some people up and running with the "essential" elements of this software.

My neice with a Wacom bamboo and a simple, straightforward interface would be a great creative combo, and if she could grow into the program, you'd have a customer for life. My dad too for that matter.

    Hi lon66,

You can check the Wacom site to be sure what I say is correct, but I believe Painter Essentials 3 is bundled with Wacom tablets, along with some other "lite" version software.

That might be the solution for now, and both your father and niece can grow into the full Painter version if they're so inclined.

My grandaughter Jody, at the age of four, dove into full-version Painter 6 and had a great time using it. My son spent only a few minutes showing her how to open a new Canvas, how to create Layers, and choose brush variants, then left the room, and she was off and running. Later, she reappeared and asked her parents to come see what she'd done.

You can see Jody's Painter 6 images on some old pages from my PixelAlley site. While it's not great artwork by adult standards, it does show that anyone who wants to can have fun using even a full Painter version (click "next" at the bottom of each page to navigate through the pages):

Admittedly, four year olds can be fearless while, later, we become afraid to try things. ;)
