Cannot open file, "Insufficient Memory to Complete this Operation"

So I have this .RIF file. I have been working on it and saving a couple of versions along the way (using "interactive save"), and all was working fine, I could save and open it neatly.

Then all of the sudden, I try to open the lastest version of the file with Painter X, and after it loads, a message saying "Insufficient Memory to Complete this Operation" appears, and the program gives up on loading it.

I tried opening it with a previous version of Painter but I get an error message instead, which makes the program crash.

The weirdest thing is that only the two lastest versions of the file cannot be opened; all but the first one.

How can I get this file back to work? I don't want to lose it.

have you tried renaming the file and then opening it? it also must be noted that RIFF files will sometimes go screwy. it's been a problem for as long as i've used it (Painter 6,7,8,9). always good to save to PSD also.

unfortunately only Corel Photo-Paint and now CorelDRAW X4 will open native RIFF files, for you to check with other software. even Irfanview doesn't support it, yet it supports EVERYTHING else... Corel has to start improving the file formats they use so that they're more interoperable, starting first with modern industry standard thumbnail previews.

I have tried renamed and it didn't work.

I believe the files are a loss then... What a shame.

I'm done using RIFFs. What other format you suggest me to use instead?

    Thanks

like i said you can save as .psd, though it will not support watercolors or impasto and the gel layer. RIFF is really quite an amazing format and it is one of the oldest multimedia formats developed. it supports layers, vector data, bitmap, animation and sound. this is why the watercolor brushes are able to be animated and why animation tools are provided in Painter. it is quite possible Painter could also have sound files used as part of the painting process, like the scratching sounds of a pencil on paper or the squeaks of felt tip pens or the hiss of an airbrush...

I and others have had an occasional problem saving .riff files compressed, so I no longer do so.  It sounds like your's got corrupted some how.  It used to be that disk space was a lot more at a premium than now.  There are some problems saving as a Photoshop file as mentioned above, but also for me any shapes, text or other vector objects become rasterized.

I like Ghiangelo's use of sound effects, but unfortunately, with all the problems of memory hogging Painter now incurs, the idea may not be too practical.  But........if we could incorporate the smells of linseed oil and turps with the oil brushes.........

Tom, i believe such multimedia effects would require the .sniff format instead of the .riff....  :)

You haven't said how large the file is or the memory available. It seems that the first response to a problem is a bug in Painter. It would be nice if Corel focused on a clean up release without any new features. I imagine many would pay for such an upgrade.

Is there a tool that gives the in memory footprint of an open file or an estimated in memory footprint for a closed file?

Or is there a formula? Maybe image demensions x color depth x # of layers + overhead?
