Can't find saved brushes or new brush category in programme files?

    Hi

I have a few Q's so please bare with me.

1st. I have had to reinstall PainterX and in doing that lost all of my custom brushes I made. I have since re made them again, and this time want to save them to my hard drive. I have created my own brush category and saved my varients into that category.

Though when I look in my Painter programme files on my hard drive the new category or brushes are not listed? Any suggestions please?

2nd. Can you import or load Photoshop CS3 brushes into Painter? If so how?

3rd. I have been making new paper textures and adding them to my paper library. It won't allow me to add anymore though, as when I create them and save they do not appear in the library.  There are 35 in total. Is there a limit?

I am a traditional illustrator that has made the transistion over to digital. I use Photoshop and PainterX and absolutely love it.

Thanks in advance for any help.

The Painter X application/program folder is, as far as Painter is concerned, read only. Any custom settings, preferences, or custom brush variants and brush categories are written by Painter to the Painter X User folder's [Workspace Name]  folder.

You should find your custom brush category in the following folder:

Mac - Users > [User Name] > Library > Application Support > Corel > Painter X > [Workspace Name] > Brushes > [Brush Library Name]

Windows - Documents and Settings > [User Name] > Application Data > Corel > Painter X > [Workspace Name]
    > Brushes > [Brush Library Name]

No, Photoshop brushes can't be used in Corel Painter.

It seems there's a file size limit to the Papers library. You should be able to use the Paper Mover to create a new custom Papers library, though, then load that custom Papers library.

Read the following to learn how to use the Paper Mover:

Painter X Help > Help Topics > Contents tab > A Workspace Tour

Click the plus sign to the left of A Workspace Tour, then click Libraries and Movers.

On the right panel, though you already know some of what's available there, I'd suggest reading the entire page.

It's great to hear you absolutely love Painter X. I do too!

    Hi Jinny

Thanks so much for your reply and help.

I have tried finding the brush catagory but still they are not anywhere you said or anywher else for that matter.

I also read breifly the mover/library help content.

When I open the Paper Mover in the Paper library it freezes the whole programme, and the only way out of it is to restart my computer....very frustrating.

I am thinking of uninstalling and reinstalling Painter again?

     Thanks again

    Phil

    Hi Phil,

Please accept my sincere apologies. The path I provided to find your custom brush category was not only wrong, it doesn't exist!

I've edited my post to correct the path and it's now in bold text. Try that and let me know if it helps.

Again, sorry to have wasted your time sending you off on a wild goose chase!

As to the Paper Mover and Painter X crashing problem, that's one for the Corel Painter developers to solve. The best thing for you to do is to post a new thread in the Got a Question? forum with an appropriately specific subject line. Include your complete system specs (with OS version number and Corel Painter version number), steps leading up to the problem, and any other details you think might help the developers to figure out what's causing the problem... then fix it.

Best wishes, and I'll watch to see if the new path I provided gets you to your custom brush category.

Re: Can't find saved brushes or new brush category in programme files?

    Hey Jinny

Thank you so much, as I have finally found the brush folder I have been searching for.

If I have to reinstall Painter again and lose my custom settings etc. Q. How do I add my custom brush folder which I have now saved to my hard drive, back to the default brush folder? Just copy and paste it?

Thanks so much again Jinny, I truly appreciate it.

     Kindest regards

    Phil

    Hi Phil,

Thanks for letting me know you finally found your custom brush category. Hooray!

It's good that you've thought about how to replace the custom brush category in case you need to some time in the future. In addition, it's a good idea to back up all of your custom settings, preferences, and other custom items on the chance you might need to either restore the program to its installed state (by holding down the Shift key while launching Painter), or Uninstall, then reinstall the program.

I find the best way is to back up the whole Workspace folder, and that's easy to do:

    1. Launch Painter X..

    2. In Window > Workspace > Customize Workspace, make sure the name of the Workspace you want to back up is displayed in the top left area of the dialog box below Workspace:.

    3. If the Workspace name is not displayed, click the small arrow on the right side of the rectangle where you see a Workspace name displayed to expand the Workspace list and select the appropriate Workspace.

    4. Click the Export Workspace... button at the bottom of the dialog box, navigate to the folder where you want to save it (somewhere outside of the Painter X application/program folder and outside of the Painter X User folder), then click the Save button.

    5. If you ever need to restore that Workspace, just open the Customize Workspace dialog box, click the Import Workspace... button, navigate to the folder where you backed it up, highlight the Workspace file and click the Open button.

TIP: When you make any custom changes in Painter X while using your Workspace, you may want to back it up again so it will always contain any custom settings, preferences, and other custom items.

If you have any questions about this procedure, let me know.

    Cheers!

Re: Can't find saved brushes or new brush category in programme files?

    Hey Jinny

Thanks so much for the info re: saving workspace etc. Very helpful indeed, and I will save my workspaces as you have advised.

I also managed to sort out my paper mover dilema. I restored the paper library back to default and started again, as the custom papers I had added were making the the library file way to big. I have now started to make smaller custom paper libraries for them. Seems to working.

    Thanks again Jinny...your a legend!

    Hey Phil,

You're welcome, and it's great to hear you have your Papers palette saving Papers again. Good job!

    Hey Jinny

This morning I read your Bio and had a look at Pixelalley etc. Wow you certainly have a lot of widespread experience! Well done, and also I think it is really great that you share your valuable knowledge and time with people such as myself through these forums. A big thanks!

I will put some time aside and get a small bio of myself together for this forum.
