tyarbrough:I'm just starting to use Painter X and need help on selections. I first develop photography I have taken in Photoshop and then open the image in Painter. The selections I made while in Photoshop are then seen in Painter as Alpha channels; however, how do I get those selections into a clone copy of the image for painting?
I know you can make selections in Painter, but they are painstaking and I don't want to have to redo them again.
Thanks!
Hi tyarbrough, and welcome to The PainterFactory!
I've moved your thread from the Got a Question? forum to the appropriate forum for questions and discussions related to general use and understanding of Painter X and X.1 to this forum, Corel Painter X.
Feel free to post in the Got a Question? forum if you have questions about Painter X and Painter X.1 technical issues or want to report bugs, either or both of which may involve the Corel Painter development team.
Now to answer your question about selections:
I just tested this using Photoshop 7 and Painter X.1.
1. In Painter X, open the PSD file containing the Alpha Channels (this is the original image).
2. Use File menu > Clone.
3. With the original image active, load one of the Alpha Channels as a selection.
4. With the Clone active, use Select menu > Auto Select > Original Selection. Now the loaded selection from the original image should be loaded on the Clone.
5. Save the selection with an appropriate name and it will appear in the Channels palette.
6. Use Ctrl+D (Windows) or Command+D (Mac) to deselect the selection. (Never click outside a selection to deselect as there's a known bug that causes Painter X and Painter X.1 to crash when we do this. Always use the keyboard shortcuts Ctrl+D or Command+D whichever is appropriate for your platform.)
7. Repeat Steps 3 through 6 for any other Alpha Channels in the original image you want to use in the Clone image.
8. When you have all selections from the original image saved in the Clone, be sure to save the file in Painter's native RIFF format so you won't need to repeat this process again in a following Painter session.
Try it and let me know if it works for you as it did for me.
Good luck!
