Help with Painter X Tutorial Intermediate Cloning

I downloaded the intermediate cloning tutorial from the Corel Painter website of a boat on a canal with a row of houses in the background. I've managed to get step 1 complete and I believe most of step 2.  I'm slightly confused where it asks me to check that I'm cloning from the right source which I don't know if I should have the clone itself marked or the original.  In either case I've tried both.  I've also got step 3 which shows how to select a paper texture.

Step 4 is the "start painting".  After setting the grainy wash bristle as indicated, I began to try to paint, but instead of the color coming through I'm getting the color of the paper fill which is yellow.

Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong?

    Hi Betty,

    I'll assume it's this tutorial you're using:

Intermediate Level - Cloning a landscape photo using other paint brushes

    My responses are inserted below....

    LogicsHere:

I downloaded the intermediate cloning tutorial from the Corel Painter website of a boat on a canal with a row of houses in the background. I've managed to get step 1 complete and I believe most of step 2.  I'm slightly confused where it asks me to check that I'm cloning from the right source which I don't know if I should have the clone itself marked or the original.

This tutorial is confusing even for me and I've used Painter for 13 years! :D

If you're going to clone paint from an original image or photo, the original image or photo should be specified as the Clone Source. Using this tutorial, when you opened the photo and adjusted saturation then used File > Clone, Painter automatically made a copy of the photo (the Clone) and specified the photo as the Clone Source.

Step 2, first sentence: In order to be clear, it might have said, a click on the Tracing Paper icon in the upper right corner of the image window should display a lowered opacity view of the photo (the Clone Source image).

Step 2, last sentence: If clicking the Tracing Paper icon did display a lowered opacity view of the photo (the Clone Source image), then you already know the photo is selected as the Clone Source. For practice, though, the way to check is to use File > Clone Source and be sure the original image's or photo's file name is checked.

I've also got step 3 which shows how to select a paper texture.

"In either case I've tried both." - My guess is that when you "tried both" you set the Clone as the Clone Source and that's why you're getting the Fill color used on the Clone Canvas when you clone paint.

    To fix this, use:

File > Clone Source and from the flyout menu, check the file name of the photo.

Now when you paint, you should see that your brush strokes bring the photo imagery to your Clone painting.

    Cheers!

For anyone having this same trouble, make sure that you have cone color switched on.  It's a little clone stamp icon to the right of the foreground and background color swatches in the little tool bar palate....
