If you haven't already, try recording and saving strokes, then playing them back one at a time with the Playback and Use Stroke Data commands checked, or play them back continuously over the whole Canvas or a selected area of the Canvas or Layer with the Auto Playback and Use Stroke Data commands checked. You'll find these commands in the Painter X and Painter X.1 Brush Selector menu, or as listed below for previous Painter versions. You'll find there are lots of uses for these commands if you spend some time experimenting. For instance, some that come to mind are:
- To create the beginning of a background for your painting,
- To create Paper textures,
- To create Patterns, and
- To reproduce a single stroke that you especially like.
In another forum a couple of days ago, one of the members asked about where Recorded and Saved Strokes are stored so she can back up the file.
Another Painter instructor responded to the question saying, in Painter X, recorded and saved strokes are found in the Auto Painting palette and said that the Delete Stroke command is found in the Auto Painting Palette's Stroke section flyout menu.
However, there's more to the story. Below are my responses posted in that thread, edited a bit for this forum, and indented:
There are two places in Painter X
through Painter X.1 and one place in previous Painter versions where we
can record and save brush strokes. Only in the Painter X.1 Auto
Painting palette is there a Delete Stroke command. I'll show you with
screen prints below.
Since at least
Painter 5, we've been
able to Record, Playback, and Auto Playback strokes. In some following
versions, more capabilities have been added.
Painter 5 through Painter 5.0.3
Brushes palette's Stroke menu:
- Record Stroke
- Playback Stroke
- Auto Playback
Painter 6 through Painter 7.1
Brushes palette's Stroke menu:
- Record Stroke
- Playback Stroke
- Auto Playback
- Save Stroke
- Strokes (flyout menu listing saved strokes)
- Use Stroke Data
Painter 8 through Painter 8.1
Brush Selector menu:
- Record Stroke
- Playback Stroke
- Auto Playback
- Save Stroke
- Strokes (flyout menu listing saved strokes)
- Use Stroke Data
Painter IX through Painter IX.5
Auto Painting Palette:
- Did not include the options to Record, Save, and Delete strokes
Brush Selector menu
- Record Stroke
- Playback Stroke
- Auto Playback
- Save Stroke
- Strokes (flyout menu listing saved strokes)
- Use Stroke Data
Painter
X.1 (I can't check Painter X since the Painter X.1 patch has been
installed, but in Help Topics, there doesn't seem to be anything about
deleting recorded and saved strokes. That option must have been added
with the Painter X.1 Update. )
Auto Painting Palette:
Brush Selector Menu:
As
you can see looking at the two screen prints above, the only place
where we can Delete Strokes is in the Painter X.1 Auto Painting palette
(not at all in earlier Painter versions unless it was also included in
Painter X).
The Painter instructor thought the recorded and saved stroke could be
saved as a custom brush variant, so I explained that a saved stroke is not a brush variant, then explained what it really is and where it's saved:
Recorded and Saved Strokes are not brush variants so they can't be treated like brush variants.
They are what the name describes,
recorded strokes, or
recorded brush strokes. "Under the hood", so to speak, I'd guess they're little Scripts that tell Painter everything needed to repaint the same brush stroke again each time we check Playback and click in the image or to repaint the stroke continuously when we check Auto Playback and click in the image to begin the action then click again to stop the action.
I'd have to confirm this with the Corel Painter developers, though, to be sure they're Script-based.
When the Recorded Stroke is saved, the information saved tells Painter how to paint the stroke, no matter which brush variant is used, or what size, color, or Paper is used. For instance, here are three examples, all using the same Recorded and Saved Stroke, but with three different brush variants (installed with Painter X), three different sizes, three different colors, and using three different Papers:

Here are a couple of examples using one of my custom brush variants first with the same Stroke then with another Stroke:

Recorded and Saved Strokes are stored in the Painter
Presets.presets file that also stores a lot of other information
like Gradients, Weaves, and more that you'll need in order to launch
Painter. You can back up that file, but don't delete it.
The Painter Presets.presets file specific to each Workspace is found in the following Painter X User folder:
Mac - Users > [User Name] > Library > Application Support > Corel > Painter X > [Workspace Name]
Windows - Documents and Settings > [User Name] > Application Data > Corel > Painter X > [Workspace Name]
NOTE: Later, I talked with one of the Corel Painter developers and he confirmed that recorded and saved strokes are stored in the Painter Presets.presets file and that they are similar to Scripts but added they are not read and processed by Painter the same way Scripts are read and processed by Painter.
