Hey all -
I am looking for a quick and dirty way to create a "pencil sketch" drawing from a source photo using Painter 2018's auto-painting functionality. I see it's possible (easy even) with Painter Essentials 6 (see Painter Tutorial YouTube vid's by Karen (?) where she does this).
Anyone have a quick tutorial or tips on how to do this?
Thanks!
KP
Under Effects tab, Surface Control at the bottom of options is one for Sketch.
I was looking for the same results as I'm using the trial version of Essentials 7 but own Painter 2019. And Google lead me to this thread. I tried as you suggested and got nothing comparable to the results Essentials 7 pencil sketch. What other options must be set, what brush (yes I tried the clone pencils) and nothing even close to the awesome pencil sketch of Essentials 7.
Anyone?
I only have PE4 but the pencil sketch presets for auto-painting are superior. They don't appear to be available in Painter 2019. Besides the Sketch Effect I mentioned, I played with various settings in 2019 and could find no combinations acceptable.
Hey Ron,
I would try going to something like woodcut in Effects and taking away black...reduce colors to 3 or 4. Then make a quick clone and Hatch...not sure what settings would be best...I would probably reduce rotation to zero. You will need a paper like the basic or sand. Slow your speed on the auto painting down so you can stop it when the desired look is achieved. I suspect Essentials 7 has automated something that can be done in 2020. I don't know that for a fact, but Painter has always been open to the user creativity. Essentials has some terrific AI additions, which I think are probably in 2020 but not as a script or automated. Anyway, when I did a quick test with woodcut, I got something pretty close. So I would start there. You can do this in 2019. Anyway, I think it is possible, but you will have to create the source image yourself. Let me know if this method gets you close.
Not sure what you mean by "Hatch". I know what cross hatching is, but it seems it is an option in Painter? Also I did try the Woodcut Effects with 3 colors, turning the back down to a dark grey. However the results were unacceptable and nowhere near what Essentials achieves. I also tried several pencil brushes in Painter 2019. Not sure what brush would give the same results as Essentials. Too bad Painter doesn't offer the presets Essentials has.
Cheers
Ken
One thing that really annoys me about Painter is the lack of sharing and helping. This thread is a prime example. If a question like this was posted on a Photoshop, TopazLabs or ArtRage forum there would have been a flood of replies attempting to assist.
All the more reason why Painter 2019 is starting to gather dust on my computer as I lean towards apps and forums that are a lot more friendly and helpful.
Thanks muchly for the great assistance.
Hatch is a preset in Painter Auto painting stroke styles.
Skip Allen is a Painter Master and gives a lot of help as well as classes- check out his blog-

Used to be a lot more users on this forum- all I can guess is that they gave up on Painter or just don't want to bother to help.
Another great forum but no griping allowed just constructive posts and questions, by invitation only- if I had your e-mail I'd send you one-

Thanks for the links. Much appreciated. However the only thing I really want to know is
"How to do a Essentials 7 Pencil type sketch or Essentials 7 AI Charcoal sketch in Painter 2019.
IMHO I think Painter maybe dying. Renderosity no longer has a Painter forum. I've been using Painter since version 9 and used to regularly purchase the Painter Magazine. I still have the issues. I was disappointed when Painter magazine was dropped.
I've watched Skip Allen's tutorials as well as Aaron Rutten, Karen Bonamaker and a few by Aaron Blaise (but he mostly uses Photoshop). I've purchased a few Painter books - Advanced Painter Techniques by Don Seegmiller, The Photoshop & Painter Artist Tablet Book by Cher Threinen-Pendarvis.
Surely someone from Corel knows the answer to the pencil sketch technique BUT I believe they would rather I fork out a bit of coin for Essentials which seems silly since I already own Painter 2019.
I was hoping I could use Painter to give my 3D renders in Vue or DAZ Studio 3D a paintery look. I've been practising with some of my digital photos. I can get a pencil sketch or charcoal effect using Photoshop & TopazLabs Impression/Studio or Photoshop & FilterForge. But I prefer the look in Essentials 7 (using demo). But since I already own Painter 2019, I do not think I should have to purchase Essentials 7 to get this effect.
Any ideas?
Truly frustrated with the unfriendliness of this forum.
Hi, I am sorry you haven't found your answer, yet. It may not be practical in Painter 2020. I am currently in Mississippi, just arrived last night. I manage my sister's care and go back and forth between GA and MS. Unfortunately, my computer in MS decided to do a major Windows update and then nothing worked. It is always something isn't it. Anyway, I have just finished restoring my microsoft and adobe products and am currently working on painter. If you will give me a few days, I'll see if I can figure out a way to accomplish what Essentials is doing. The problem isn't auto-painting...that works well in both programs, the problem is the set up of the photograph. Essentials is changing the photo and that is what I need to see if I can do in painter. That is why I suggested wood cut. You can change the color of the image and then auto-paint. But I didn't try to exactly recreate Painter Essentials. Not sure I can. But I am willing to give it a try, but I will need at least a week. My time is rather limited when I am in Mississippi.
Skip. Thanks muchly. But it sounds like you already have your plate full. Your priority is your sister. Be with her.
To be honest I have a love/hate relationship with Painter. It takes too much effort to get the same results that are much easier in other competing applications. I'm not really a free hand painter. I am more a Photographer and 3D modeler/renderer who would like to give some of my images a sketch or painted look. I'm leaning more and more towards Photoshop & TopazLabs as they have a much better support mechanism.
Many thanks though, I do appreciate your kind offer but your hands are already full enough. Lots of luck with your computer. I just retired after 30+ years of computer/fileserver support.

To give everyone an idea what I'm trying to do, here is a 3D model of a traditional styled American hot rod I modeled in Hexagon 3D & Silo3D. It was rendered in Vue Complete. The sketch effect was created using Photoshop & Plugin TopazLabs Studio/Impression.
I can achieve an pencil sketch in Essentials 7. Also a charcoal effect as well in Essentials 7. In Corel Painter 2019 I find it almost impossible. Corel should be including these Essentials presets with Corel 2019.
PS: Plugin FilterForge was used to create the cross hashing on the ground.
Using my above 3D Render and Essentials 7 I can get an AI Charcoal and a Pencil render like this. As much as I try, I can get NOTHING even close with Painter 2019.
