Hi! I'm pretty new to Painter, having come from using a decent amount of photoshop use. I am liking it, except I can't seem to figure out one issue I'm having. Is there a way to set up a hotkey so that I have the Eraser function in use only while I hold the key? I feel like I'm being held back by having to press the Erase key, do some erasing, then press the Brush key again to continue where I left off.
nope, this feature is not available in painter.
if you are considering adding another tool to your workflow, clip studio paint does it out of the box - it has a temporary eraser that is only activated while you hold CMD (ctrl on windows, I think?)
your best alternative in painter is pulling out an eraser brush variant into a custom palette (shift+drag -> pull out the brush from the brush selector), and switch between a painting brush and an erasing brush via the "recent brushes" palette that you can stack somewhere for easer access. this will also minimize the brush lag that was pretty noticeable when toggling between brush tool and N-key eraser tool last time I used a painter 2019 demo.
Huh, thats a bit disappointing. Thanks for the tip, I'll see if I can get used to that. Not having a hold-to-erase seems very odd.
I'm still using CS3 cos that's the last time I bought Adobe. I don't think it had a hold to erase back then, or else I never bothered to discover it... So putting that shortcut in perspective... it's what you've gotten used to and probably has a history of appearing within the last 10 years, but the rest of the world hasn't necessarily evolved along the same lines.
HOWEVER, there's still the shortcut keys, switch to eraser(N) and back to brush(B). There IS a hold key for eyedropper, ("alt", when in brush mode) so I guess it's not entirely alien to painter. There's a potential you might be able to reassign that key?
THERE is one feature that I reckon is the best of all, it's the eraser on the other end of your pen. I dunno about you, but I grew up in the days when pencils were a thing, turning that stylus around to access eraser is hard wired into my nature ....
I know of the shortcut keys of switching between them, that's what I'm currently doing. My stylus does not have that feature.
Incidentally, here's a useful guide to existing shortcuts:
If you look under settings you'll notice there's a mass of shortcuts unassigned to keys, so a lot of options have been considered should they be needed.
However, B and N are right next to each other on the keyboard, so getting a bit of two finger action into play won't be too severe a hardship, eh?
I think you're misunderstanding what I want. I want to be able to have it set to the pen, draw, then when I make a mistake hold a button to swap to erase, remove the error, then when I let go of that key being held it immediately and automatically goes back to the pen.
And you don't like the B/N two step?
Its rather clunky compared to what I'm used to with photoshop.
