I have Corel Painter 2019. I find it exploitative of the Corel corporation, to release a new "version" of the software every year, only to provide minor changes/updates that should be included in the "full" versions. As minor as they are they do NOT justify being new versions of the applications. It wreaks of greediness to me.
Also, why does Corel not fix glaring issues that have plagued the software for years! I am so fed up with the lines (always perfectly straight) that are often arbitrarily drawn through my paintings?! This happens frequently, and I have to spend hours cleaning them up! None of my other graphic programs do this. Also, as frequently happens, my brush stops working, and I have to reboot my pc to get it to wok again! This is very counterproductive. Also, everytime I close and then reopen the program it NEVER remembers the layer I was working on. Instead, it always defaults to the "Canvas" layer. No other graphics program does this. Also, Corel Painter can't handle larger file types. There are numerous other issues that this software has, but I'll sum it up to say that these issues have been with the app for many years, and it appears Corel has no interest in addressing them. They'd rather opt to move on with releasing yet another (Ahem..) "version" every year. The price of the software is way too much in my opinion. The only reason I use the software is because of its brushed ans textured papers. They are the best I've ever used. If Photoshop or Sketchbook Pro had these features, I'd leave this crappy software so fast, it would make your head spin!
I don't think your issues with painter will be commented on by corel representatives on this board, but if you use facebook, cross-posting this at the corel painter page will earn you a chance to get a personalized insincere apology from their social media handler.
Thanks for your comments and advice. I will repost this on the paintr FB page s you'ce suggsted.
Maybe if you add a bit more detail on these issues, we could at least provide you some work-arounds? For example which steps cause the lines? Is it a specific brush or brush technology? Which brush stops working?
Unfortunately there isn't a work-around to the selected layer on document open...at least to my knowledge maybe others will comment.
Either way maybe we can make using Painter a little easier for you...
Thanks for your comments and time. I really appreciate it. As for the lines (always perfectly straight) being drawn, they often appear on some area outside the window I am zoomed into. As many artists do, I zoom into smaller areas to work on details, and I save them often. Once I zoom out to see the whole painting in progress, I then see the line (or lines) drawn on my painting. You can't imagine my frustration. I work mostly with the hard chalk brush on a course canvas background.
As for the brush not working issue, this happens often, and it doesn't seem to matter which brush I am using. For instance, I love working with the new thick brushes, but they too will stop working once in a while. Also, this is an intermittent problem, and does not happen with every session.
There are other issues of course that I did not mention in my earlier post, like the program freezing up. This happened a lot more with earlier versions, and I am grateful that it only happens seldomly with the 2019 version. Unfortunately, with the 2019 version as with the earlier versions, Painter will sometimes exit altogether when I'm in the middle of painting. So of course all my unsaved work is gone the next time I open the application, hence the reason I try to save very often. I never know when it is going to happen.
The point I am trying to make is, that while the features of Painter outshine all of its competitors, it is about the buggiest program out there, and Corel needs to fix it, or I (and I suspect many others) will abandon ship. I have a Behance page that displays all my work, and you can visit it to see the kinds of images I create using Painter. It might give you some insight as to how I'm using the product. The URL is pasted below for your reference.
If you can't find any workarounds, don't be too concerned. My workaround is sheer patience, because I LOVE the end results of my work, and they are not (currently) achievable with any other platform!
No problem, hopefully I can help in some way...in the end, the goal is to be able to focus on the art, right? Speaking of which, thanks for sharing your portfolio! Impressive, most impressive.
For the intermittent crashes--there were several reports of this behavior with certain Wacom drivers. Here is one that I have found to be stable with my setup...if you have a moment between projects, consider upgrading/downgrading in case it helps: http://cdn.wacom.com/u/productsupport/drivers/win/professional/WacomTablet_6.3.32-3.exe
For the lines...I've seen those before on my Windows setup...zooming in and out, very annoying but they are temporary and don't leave a permanent mark. Am I correct that they are actually corrupting your painting? Any chance you provide a screenshot? Hmm....actually there were some reports of diagonal, or depending on the setup seemingly horizontal lines jetting out from certain strokes with Wacom devices, especialy Cintiqs. Again, many reported improvements with the Wacom driver listed above.
In terms of the brushes failing...that one is trickier. Hopefully there are a couple other board members with ideas here...
So the bottom line is I'm wondering if there's a chance...that a Wacom driver change could help.
Stay in touch, and thanks again for the share!
