Hii,
I recently bought Corel Painter 2019 in the Humble Bundle thing and I absolutely adore it! The only thing that keeps me from enjoying it fully is that there's a small (3-5 second) delay between hotkeys. Is there any setting I could change to help it run just a little faster?
Hmm, I've not seen that before on my system the hotkeys are pretty much instantaneous. Can you provide a bit more detail? What OS are you running? Which hotkeys have this lag?
Mostly D(colorpicker) and B(Brush) keys.
I'm not very tech savvy and I don't have much experience with issues like this, but my computer runs Windows 10 and has a Intel Pentium processor with 1.60GHz, 1601 Mhz, 4 Cores, and 4 logical processors.
Ok I have these steps a try on my Win 10 system...switching between B and V was pretty much instantaneous but admittedly it's a 2.9ghz i7 940 CPU (it's an old but fast 4-core CPU). But maybe there's a chance to make things a little faster...but first maybe we can do a test:
1. Select Texture Cover > Gauzy Chroma 2.5 D
2. Switch to the Dropper (D)
3. Switch back to the brush (B)
How much delay?
4. Select Pens and Pencils > Flat Color 2
5. Switch to the Dropper (D)
6. Switch back to the brush (B)
How much delay? Is there less delay than Gauzy Chroma 2.5D?
Let me know what you find, then we can take the next step to try and optimize...
Yes! There's less of a delay there. I tried to time it and it came out to be a 0.4 second difference between brushes. What can we do?
Thanks for testing this out. So (I think) what this test is telling us is that some portion of the delay is happening when Painter 'builds' the brush. Obviously a stronger CPU, more ram, etc. will help but let's see how far we can get with your current hardware.
An important step is to determine which type of brushes you want to use, and help you find the fastest possible brushes and/or tweak existing brushes to minimize the delay. The impact here will be a bit faster switching AND faster brushing, so it's probably worth figuring it out.
So...what brushes are you enjoying with so far? Let's start with your "top 3" and go from there...
Next let's see what we can do to optimise your current computer system to have as much CPU and memory available to Painter so it can build the brush faster. It will help other aspects of Painter's performance. This article is pretty good...BUT you may not need to or want to do all 19 steps...I would start with the ones that are easy/comfortable for you...in particular steps 1, 2, 3, 7, 9, 10, 11, and 12 would be a good starting point. The other steps are perhaps more drastic and I will otherwise assume your system to be pretty healthy so I would recommend skipping those for now.

Again, proceed with caution here, and only do the steps you are comfortable with.
As an aside, if you are on a laptop, the #1 way to increase performance (for most systems) is to plug it in! It's amazing how many laptops run a 'power saving profile' when unplugged that throttles back system performance.
So the plan is get you an optimal set of brushes, and slightly tweak your system, and hopefully that will streamline your experience.
Okay! Well, I did all the steps you suggested and I can say it does work a little bit faster although not perfect. My three top brushes as of now are Flat Color, Glazing Acrylic 2 and Dull Cont. If I could just get those to load smoothly, I'd be so happy!
