Hi,
It doesn't use GPU acceleration
Not on my MacBookPro 2013 with Nvidia Geforce GT 750 M 2 go + intel iris pro
Not on my Macpro 2009 16 Go Ram, SSD boot, with Ati HD 4870 500 mo
or more recent
Radeon RX 580 4 Go I just by for Corel Painter use.
The support says it is not use in case of CPU is faster than GPU but this is bullshit.
Mu trusty great but old 2,93 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon 2009
cannot be faster
than a 2017 GPU.
I think Corel does not give what it promise nowadays.
Happy new year everybody.
So far, Painter 2020 was able to leverage my GPU on my Windows 10 system with an i5 and Radeon RX570; however on my Macbook Painter decided not to leverage my Radeom M9 370X (Discreet) or my Iris Pro (integrated) so I think the i7 was the winner.
On both these systems Painter 2020 is faster than 2019 tho as there is more than just GPU improvements in the release.
@KrisLap @Aza: Are you both finding performance of 2020 the same or better than 2019?
Hi I don't think the i7 is the winner.
I think that Corel made it working for windows.
It neither works on the Macs, that is the problem.
I have a 2009 Macpro Nehalem Cpu (+- i5 nowadays on benchmarks) and just buying for it a compatible 2017 Radeon Rx 580 8 go and DDR5 Memory,
Painter doesn't recognize it at all.
And yes, painstormstudio recognize it and his open GL 1.2 abilities. Photoshop and illustrator recognize it.
I am not naïve thinking adding GPU it would be make my old Mac Pro a race horse, but it should help a little.
And yes I was buying the GPUs for Corel Painter 2020 Use in mind.
Their marketing is very clear : a lot faster with good GPU. up to 20X Faster...
Nelson Chiu with Windows Expresii is able to GPU accelerate his software, with a lot more complicated 3D brushes modeled from Chinese painting real bristles.
(I saw a post of a guy with a still Mighty Macpro 2013 asking with anguish why Avx2 isn't support on his Mac.
Well Avx2 is a Intel Core technology from +- 2012 and his CPU are mighty Xeon who can handle well Corel Painter 2020, their test is just not knowing Xeon existence).
They just mean : Recent CPU from Avx2.
Corel Painter is a company who do not recognize his mistakes or giving solution for the them.
Faster than Corel Painter 2019 ? Not that much.
Since the years painter claim new version are 10X or 20X faster or even 2X faster, their brushes should be lightning fast.
They're better than Painter 2008, for sure but they' not that fast.
I own a Corel Draw Graphic Suite 2017 licence I do not use because it was in a bundle and it only work on windows.
I buyed a 2009, 2017, 2018, 2019 Corel Painter licence.
I wil not buy a 2020 licence with all those problem and bulshit response I had from the company.
Another things who bother me :
- Corel Painter 2020 is still using several kind of layers, it make unwanted layers, real watercolor layers other thick paint layers, and another real watercolor layer, it is a headheache layer management.
Layer management is always tricky, but what other software is making a layer per brushes kind ?
They claim they improve the UI, but they don't improve what really matters.
- They have some great brushes but the new ones (thick layers) do not blend well as the older ones. Some of them are awful; not artistic at all.
When old great Skip Allen bake thick paint brushes, they blend well !

From the old days, they made brushes with analog artists, not only programers.
i will stick with Corel Painter 2019 from time to time for a few great legacy brushes remaining in the program.
Sorry for my Anger and my English.
My apologies, I didn't intend to upset you, I see you have a lot of concerns about Painter. I just wanted to share how it works on my systems..it may not be the same on all systems.
By the way, have you tried any of the thick paint brushes in the "Natural Media Brushes" library? They can be found under the :"Acrylics" and "Oils" categories, and are a bit different than the Thick Paint brushes in the default library.
Also, have you checked Skip's website for thick paint brushes? He has some custom brushes free for download: https://skipallenpaints.com/skips-thick-paint-brushes-download/
His brushes are always awesome.

How are you certain that artists are not contributing to new brushes in Painter? Where did you get this information?
Again, hopefully this information is seen as helpful/factual, as my goal here is to help everyone enjoy Painter. :)
Thank you for your help.
if you read my post entirely i was talking about skip Allen brushes ;-)
I buyer his last course too.
If he collaborated on Two last painter, some ofhis great brushes would be in the software.
"How are you certain that artists are not contributing to new brushes in Painter? Where did you get this information?"
If artist collaborate or not on Painter 2019 / 2020, the result is some default brushes aren't artistic at all.
Just take a look at Artrage 6 (demo) and how their oil blends with tool / color option / realistic color blending (blue + yellow = Green), they mix well, we're on another quality standard.
Idem for Escape Motion's rebelle for watercolor, the best for watercolor digital simulation.
I love Corel Painter and I have great expectations for the future :
My response to AZA :
i dream of a Corel painter team who would give us :
-a high end realistic brushes set, with a few amazing brushes we can’t tell from the real life ones :
-oils / watercolors / inks / conté / pencil / inks / markers ( like in the natural média)
