painter 2019 brush 'banding' or 'stepped' shading problem

just switched to painter 2019 and getting a weird artifact, a stepped transition between lighter and darker areas.  Below is an example with the exact same Real 2b brush used as a shader. (angled on its side, a single stroke). i went through Brush Controls and all the settings appear to be the same.  any idea what's going on?  thanks for any advice.  :)

  • Hmm, off the top of my head:

-different brush tracking settings (most likely)

-different brush setting (Painter 2018 has a lower spacing value, or a lower ang step value in the Size flyout)

-possibly a different paper texture (least likely)
