For some reason, one layer of the five total I am working with has a texture that looks like the underside of a carpet! I cannot change it. Apply Surface Texture does not seem to allow me to change paper type. I used Paper > Standard Artist Canvas throughout and all other layers look just fine. The sky and clouds in the pic below are what I want - just a hint of texture. But the balloon and basket are over the edge. Any help in getting it back to some form of normal would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you!
Hi Bob, I think we'll need a bit more detail to understand the issue...can you describe the steps you are doing on each layer? Could the balloon layer be a special layer type, such as Thick Paint? Or did you convert a standard layer to a Thick Paint layer? There are many possibilities here. Perhaps a screenshot of your Layer stack (i.e. a screenshot of the layer panel) could also help?
Generally-speaking, you should be able to change your paper texture when applying surface texture, so what we have here is either a bug or a workflow issue...
Thank you for the help. I'm worried the painting is a loss if I can't fix this. I didn't do anything unusual to the layer. Just a regular layer. It started off going fine. I did start using some acrylics after initially starting with oils, but even then it looked good. I spent quite a bit of time on the layer with no issues then the change occurred. I'm not aware of doing anything, but may have done so inadvertently. It actually seems now that the 'apply surface texture' no longer has any affect on that layer. Here's a copy of the layer panel:
Hmm, ok before saving again...do you have a backup file? For example, even if you didn't intentionally do an iterative save or make an intentional backup, Painter often has a "your file name_bak.rif" in the same folder as your original.
Again, without knowing all the details, based on your description here is what I think happened (I might be wrong, just doing my best from a distance)
1. At some point, you did apply surface texture to layer 5
2. Although you can undo the effect, you need to perform the undo before you get past your undo steps (by default you have 32 undo steps)
3. If you tried to re-apply surface texture to layer 5, it may actually be working but is very hard to see...so even changing paper textures may not be visible
So I would:
a) save your current file as a new name
b) save any other documents you have open
c) close Painter
d) Search for the backup file, maybe it will not have the effect applied
e) if not, yes I'm afraid you will need to redo the balloon
f) consider either more undo steps and/or using iterative save...it's a great feature 'just in case' (I personally use it all the time, I save when I'm about to do 'major' steps like collpasing layers, applying effects, etc.)
I think I've tried all the steps you had listed. This is the first time I've saved each time and kept the same name. I'll go back and give save names a new number each time to avoid this type of thing.
Thank you again.
You're welcome Bob...sorry I couldn't be of more help and glad to see you sticking with the project...it's looking very nice! (It's so nice to see what people are creating!)
