I know this pops up every year, I just can't find any of the threads relating to recent versions.I've been using Painter 2023 for months now and I figure it's safely time to uninstall Painter 2021.In doing so Windows 10 loses its Riff thumbnails.Reinstalling it I get my thumbs back. If I select "always open with Painter 2023" I lose them again.Current workaround was to reinstall 2023 after reinstalling 2021, so the files open in 2023 while maintaining the thumbnails provided by 2021.It seems a bit inefficicient to keep the older software on the computer just for thumbnails though!Any thoughts or possible solutions?Best wishes,-Brendon Wright
You mention "If I select "always open with Painter 2023" I lose them again." is this if you right click on a riff file to set the association via the OS?
Yes, but it works fine if I install the older version and then reinstall the newest version: the file association is with the last version installed while keeping the thumbnails provided by the older version. It's a workaround I guess. I don't understand why 2021 provides thumbnails while 2023 doesn't: uninstalling 2021 should hand over thumbnail duties to 2023.I don't recall if I've tried unistalling 2021 and then reinstalling 2023 to repair anything that 2021 took with it that it shouldn't have.
In general, the latest installation will take over thumbs and file associations, we always suggest running a repair on the latest version after a previous uninstall was completed. If you 'manually associated' the RIF file format with a Corel Painter application in the OS (i.e. via Open with or Settings > Apps > Default apps) running re-installs or repairs will only partially fix the issue because the OS keeps the override.
If you have done a manual association and you are comfortable with registry edits you can try the following:
If the preview has the incorrect product version icon then the rif file format is still associated to that Painter version. Double clicking on the RIF file will open the RIF file in that version. In order to associate the RIF file to another version run a Repair of the desired product version So for example if the thumbnail shows the 2020 icon but you want 2023 to open these files then you can run a repair of Painter 2023 as the association and thumbnail should work.
Let me know if this helps.
Thanks Leeg!Unfortunately the uninstall of 2021 runs into an error and refuses to uninstall now!So it seems what might happen when 2021 is off the computer is a moot point.Even the "warning" below is a bit odd! It thinks I'm trying to install. Not to worry. The software works for now and the old 2021 isn't taking up too much space.
I ran a manual uninstall of 2021 as per Corel's instructions and it worked! Thumbnails are still there. Thanks so much, Leeg!
