I've been using Painter since around 2000, back before corel owned it. I feel that Painter has lost its way and no longer has a identity or aim of what it ultimately is suppose to be. Its suppose to be the premiere software for artists, yet the devs insist on adding things that do little for artists yet more for people who do art casually and want to try random stuff. Audio brushes? AI painting? How on earth does that even fit with the painter theme? Time and resources could of spent on adding things that matter. How about I don't know...something simple like recent documents prioritizing themselves by the last time they were opened? The ability to copy and paste multiple layers at once. How about being able to rotate the reference window? How about adding gpu support for all brushes instead of trying to milk them by adding them each painter revision? I can't even imagine what random feature they will add in painter 2022.
I must agree with you Aza. Decided to try Painter for the brush engine that I really like, also how the colors interacts...and the guide / perspective tools are nice.But my biggest issue is lack of UX and UI design to resemble modern software and most sad is that it lacks really basic functionality. To me it feels that devs haven't seen and tried how other painting software works or do not invest too much to QA or testing by professional users. It is ok to be different and bring new ways and ideas as for example Pixologic is doing, but it needs to be built on good core functionality and sadly Corel Painter lacks it. I putted in few weeks to go through most stuff.., watched tutorials, and looked in official documentation...but I am really disappointed in overall functionality.just to name a fewLayer system totally unusable...- when I select multiple layers and want to reorder them it moves only one layer in a layer stack- when duplicating group, visibility of the layers is not kept, it unhides all layers in a group- If I hide group with some hidden layers inside and unhide group, all layers in group are unhidden so it is not retaining visibility- when using copy merged and past it to new layer, image gets brighter for no apparent reason (no layer blending or so active) if I am doing something wrong then there is somethin really not user friendly about it...I was searching it on internet and documentation and found nothing- no clipping layers- no adjustment layers with possibility to non-destructible edit it (at least levels and curves would be nice to have)Brush Sizeif you change the size with keyboard shortcuts "[" "]" it is really laggy for those dynamic / procedural brushes but even for captured ones (I have I7 7700, NV 1070 32GB DDR4, SSD Samsung 970 EVO Plus) as I am primary 3D artist and I do not have issue in any other software I use...you can live with it as changing size with ctrl+alt is not laggy... but bugs me that it always puts size to zero and you need to drug the new size all the way up...does not make sense....Why it is not keeping the actual size when ctrl+alt drag and just adding or reducing size...Interactivity response from tools overallmost of the software still feels slow, when you are using color corrections, warp tools..Moving selectionIt is possible to move layer with direction keys (pixel move) or shift+direction keys (little bit bigger movement), which is nice, but it is not working on selection (moving selected part of image), if I make lasso selection, I am not able to nudge / move the selected part of image with keys....works only for whole layer...This restricts the workflow a lot... when I use free transform tool, edit my selected part of image (scale, squeeze, perspective...) and I want to move precisely transformed selection gizmo with keys it doesn't work...this removes possibility to precisely reposition your selection and further edit your transform gizmo, then maybe again move the selected part of image a bit, transform gizmo more...etc....Filling colorIf I create selection I want to have possibility to quickly fill the selection with selected color.Now the tool under Edit "Fill..." shows you UI to reselect the color which makes workflow slow and it is just more unneeded clicking...For some people it can be useful at some situations...but when you painting it is really bugging...I found in keyboard shortcuts under Other/Fill with "Fill With current Color" made me supper happy because there is also with texture, gradient...so I thought it will work like I press the button and it will quickly fill my selection with color/gradient or texture that I have already selected in UI... but it only switches preference of bucket tool...so my happiness went away again :(...Did not found any other tool / way to quickly create fill with already selected color / texture gradient...And I can go on and on....I really want to use Painter, but for now it is almost unusable for professional workflows...And the price tag is really not fitting the quality when you look at Clip Paint Studio which I also have, or even Krita, which is completely free software and in many ways more advanced...FOR THE DEVS: FOCUS ON UX AN UI DESIGN AND CORE FEATURES DO NOT ADD MORE CLUTTER, THE SOFTWARE IS POWERFULL IN A WAY, BUT IT LACS SOO MANY BASIC FUNCTIONALITY AND MODERN WORKFLOWS, FULL OF "BUGS" AND UNFINISHED TOOLS, THAT IT IS ALMOST UNUSABLE, WHICH IS REALLY DISAPOINTING FOR THE PRICE TAG + PAIED UPGRADES WITH STILL SAME ISSUES.Please step up in your tools and user interface + UX friendliness workflow and make the Painter Super Awesome and more Advanced!!! Don't let it rotten!
the brush size issue - depending on your screen estate it might be more convenient to use the brush size slider (it never lags) and/or pull out brush size panel out of the window -> brush settings menu, and keep it somewhere on the screen;
it doesn't have brush lag either and you can use precision dragging on any slider in recent painter versions, i think it's cmd/ctrl+drag?? or something similar.
painter invented the alt+ctrl brush resize that CSP and other apps picked up on, but never really evolved on it in a meaningful way.
Hi ipetcats,thank you for the advice! I will try to use brush size the way you suggesting, I am not changing the brush size too frequently, but would be nice to have it working with the drag as it is quick and you do not need to travel on the screen that much.I am still going to try using Painter as I really like the brush engines, how colors mix between each other, but till they step up in core features I will not consider upgrading. But who knows maybe Devs will surprise us with next update :).Is there actually some other place / other official channel for suggesting features to be added to Painter? Or it is best to post suggestions here?
corel do beta-testing and they also run a facebook as another social media outlet for painter, with some irregular promises of feedback off this board being monitored and considered.
with that in mind I use this comment from the painter 2019 thread as a reference point for what you can expect from the team given the reality of painter development at the moment:
I like to use the "onscreen" brush resize in Preferences and then program it to the front button on my Wacom Pen
It's under the "Other" drop down. You can see I put "B" as the shortcut. So when I'm painting, I just tap the button on my Wacom pen and then drag the pen to resize on screen. It works great. I never use the Alt+Ctrl resize anymore size I started using this method years ago.
For me this was working same as ctrl+alt drag, when activated always starts at 0 brush size instead at actual size of your brush and scaling it down or up based on direction you drag. If I used it correctly.
