I know how to create a custom palette but cannot add any tool to it. My Knowledge doc claims that you select the tool and it will appear in the palette. I cannot get this to work for me. I have also read that holding the Shift key and dragging the tool to the palette works for adding a new tool. This does not work either. No doubt I'm doing something incorrectly.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
I'll do my best to help here...
To Add a brush to a custom palette:
1. Open the brush selector (find the category/brush variant you want)
2. Hold shift, then drag out of the brush selector.
To add a tool to the custom palette:
1. Go to Menu > Window > Custom Palette > Add Command
2. Select the custom palette you want to add the tool to (i.e. Custom 1)
3. There will be a menu to the far right of the ribbon called "Tools"
4. Select the tool in the menu, then click Add
5. Add as you wish.
Once complete, you may wish to arrange items and/or change the look and feel on the palette. To do this:
-drag the bottom edge or corner to make the palette taller and/or wider
-right click (Windows) or 2-finger click (Mac) to change from text view to icon view
-hold shift to move items around on the custom palette...when dragging, be sure to keep the item on the palette (if you drag off the palette, the shortcut to the brush or tool will be deleted)
TIP: virtually all menu items can be added to a custom palette--you are not limited to brushes/tools!
Bottom line: I think the confusion here is that some people call the brushes in the brush selector "tools", and the method for adding tools (from the toolbar) is different than the method of adding brushes.
Hope this helps!
Thank you for your in-depth response to my query.
I did as you suggested and what you see below is what I saw.
I did not see any menu to the far right called "Tools". I tried to drag or select several menu items and nothing would work. I had a custom palette in my Painter 2016 version, but for some reason I cannot do the same in Painter 2020.
Could you elaborate a bit more on this?
Okay, I finally figured this out. Once I located the "Tools" menu item, I selected a tool and its title appeared on the "Menu Item" line in the Create Palette / Add Command pane as seen above. I was trying to drag my tool selection and that definitely does not work.
I am now good to go. Thanks for your help.
Hi Phillip--so glad you found it.
For anyone else reading this thread--look for the actual menu strip along the top of the screen...the one that says "File, Edit, Canvas" etc....when this dialog is up, the menu grows, and to the far right should be "tools".
Not the most obvious place, but should work nicely once it's discovered!
Custom palettes, IMHO, are an extremely important feature of Painter that must be mastered. I'm pretty rusty with regard to all the bells and whistles that are built in to Painter, but do hope to come back up to speed at my time allows. I am going to add all of the custom palette details to one of my websites.
I sincerely appreciate your help.
Happy painting, indeed.
