Hey, I just got Corel Painter 2019 but I'm finding the program very laggy despite having a relatively high end PC that can run much more intensive things (Geforce RTX 2060, Ryzen 5 3600, 16GB RAM). The worst lag is when resizing brushes using shortcuts, every time I want to simply resize my brush it pauses and gives me the 'processing' icon which slows drawing down to a snail pace since I resize it all the time. The UI is also just generally quite laggy and unresponsive when using any of the tools, switching between them etc. Right now my settings are for it to use 80% memory and 6 CPU cores.
Does anyone have any tips on how to improve performance on the program?
you're running into generic performance issues painter has been plagued with for close to a decade, all ignored by corel.
painter 2020 added GPU acceleration for certain brushes, but it didn't help brush resize lag at all (and those brushes are basic enough to perform well without extra gpu power.)
painter 2019 only uses your CPU, RAM and SSD (if available) to improve performance, but the UI framework is buggy and slow.
you might want to try paintstorm studio for a somewhat similar experience. it has the nicest, the smoothest brush resize I've tried in an app, and it's also very inexpensive. it doesn't have as many extra brush types as painter, though.
I've no problems with Painter 2019- try resetting by holding down the Shift key while starting the program- solves many UI issues.
Good suggestion, Ron. My observations are similar, Painter 2019 performance should be pretty snappy on a system like you are describing, Seerfree so maybe something else is going on.
For example, even simple brushes can be customized in a way that requires more calculations when the brush is resized. For example, if the brush rotates, settings in the angle panel can impact resize performance. A very low value on "Ang Step" tends to impact performance.
If you are switching between tools like the dropper, then back to the brush, you would 'routinely feel the impact' of that brush building.
If the reset doesn't work, what brush were you using? Did you customize it? What settings did you change?
