i played a bit with corel painter 2018, maybe for a hour and this is what i've found sofar:
pro:-didn't manage to crash the program to desktop by playing a minute with the selection lasso. painter 10 was very prone to that.-undo (control+z) finally seems to correctly update your image, in Painter 10 it occasionally undid your previous stroke but didn't update the canvas.con:-still unstable-color triangle lags behind cursor if a brush from the thick paint category is selected.-maximising painters window leaves a 1 pixel border on bottom and right side of the screen.-zooming sometimes leaves a horizontal line artifact behind when "area-averaging" is enabled. if you make a brush stroke thru the line it disappears in that location (similar asundone brush strokes would behave in painter 10 when the canvas didn't update). turning "area-averaging" off renders most zoom levels super jagged.-zoom tool doesn't update the current zoom % value until you reach 200% zoom. select zoom tool and enter a value, for example 25% and enter. next left click with the zoom tool on the canvasto zoom - notice you are zooming in but the value doesn't update until you zoomed 200% in, also if you type in a value then zoom in 1-2 times and retype the previous value it will not adjustthe zoom at all. can also occur while zooming out, only seems to update on 200 and 400 zoom.-the search feature doesn't find ANYTHING, not even if you type the exact name of your currently selected brush.-wet grainy brush starts lagging after a stroke is done. make a stroke and when you release left click or lift the tablet pen and move the cursor you can watch it lag and stutter quite drastically.the duration of the stutter seems dependent on the stroke length but even a short one will have 1-2 seconds of stutter.-experienced random twirls with a certain pallate knife if i change angle to rotation and use the wacom artpen.-advertisements for new overpriced brush packs tied into the program.
i didn't try hard to find bugs but they are very common in corel painter 2018 - or most likely any corel painter version.
shall we make this the official "one bug a day" thread? todays entry:
-Scratchboard tool leaves random translucent single pixels in the stroke.
question: is there a way to change the "Dab Profile" for instance of the scratchboard tool without loosing the hard edges? if i switch it to any other then the "1-Pixel Edge" they behave like some sort of gradient, i'm pretty sure in Painter 10 you could change them without loosing the hard edge.
>question: is there a way to change the "Dab Profile" for instance of the scratchboard tool without loosing the hard edges?
no. this brush is pretty much supposed to be used with the flat profile only (the bottom right one), it always produced the gradient-ish look in the previous versions when used with a softer brush profile.
corel devs don't read those boards anymore, and I'm pretty sure they are perfectly aware how buggy their application is - and with that in mind they'll keep adding more and more bugs and broken features as long as their users keep purchasing the upgrades and optional paid content.
the brush store malware was universally hated when they launched it a few years ago - corel are above listening to users and treating their paying customers with any respect.
strange, i remember using the scratchboard tool with a point dab, or at least it appeared that way if i did a stroke. in 2018 it seems to start/end more abruptly with a wall (which kinda represents the "1-Pixel Edge" profile) instead of starting/ending very thin and pointy. maybe its just a pressure control issue tho, thx for the reply!
i didn't have the devs or bug fixes in mind, they quite obviously don't care. i think it would be usefull for potential customers if they could see at first glance what type of software they are about to buy into and how "well" its maintained. for people that already stepped into the trap or were kinda forced to upgrade it could be a source to check for workarounds.
painter used to have better pressure control, but not to that extent; also, check if your minimal size value for this brush is set at zero.
another thing is are you absolutely sure you used the scratchboard tool? I used to swear that it was the brush for making line art in painter, however in reality my best results always came from a basic circular brush with low spacing.
I'm afraid painter users rely on amazon prime reviews and marketing articles corel commissions for each new release that provide surface-level overview of the features and always describe some sort of idealized painter experience that can't be replicated outside of the writers narrative.
however, you are absolutely right, it might be a good idea to keep a consolidated log of current painter issues.

pretty sure, i think it had the same name in painter 10 and under "general brush controls" -> "dab type" it also used to be "rendered". its good for linework but if you make a bigger variant with opacity set to pressure its also decent to explore random shapes by switching directions rapidly.
