painter x and mac 10.6.4 problems

I posted ...I think in the wrong spot. Really need some help here. I went from 10.4.11 to 10.6.4 and painter has a message on launch that says it's corrupted. I don't have a disk because....this was an upgrade and when I bought the computer I did a wire transfer of OS and programs that mac offers for you. Any suggestions?

I backed up the OS before installing new OS. I also took the folder from the backup and copied it over to the new OS. No luck.

Some observations about the airbrushes

I've been working on a tutorial which centers around Painter 11's Airbrush Category. What I found slightly frustrating was the coarseness of the droplets in airbrushes using the dab type 'airbrush' which are intended to be the most faithful simulation of real airbrushes. The Broad Wheel Airbrush 50 for example - which starts with a feature setting of 0.7 - lowering it even to 0.1 doesn't really make that big a difference - it just takes longer to build up the paint.

What I found was that I had to view a 300dpi document at 25% to see the smoothness many people associate with airbrushing. Here's a quick test I did to demonstrate. I drew three circular selections - each double the size of the last and airbrushes them using the default settings of the variant mentioned above. Then I took three screen grabs at 25%, 50% and 100%. At 100% the smallest circle looks the same size as the middle size circle viewed at 50% which looks the same as the largest circle at 25%.

I guess what this means is that if something is intended for screen use, then you'd have to work 4 times bigger to get the required smoothness. My tutorial is for print so in future I'd probably try and work at even higher than 300dpi - the only other option seems to be applying some blending or smoothing out with one of the non Airbrush dab variants like Digital Airbrush.

Invalid Serial Number Message

I'm on Snow Leopard 10.6.4, trying to get Painter 11 to work.

I had a hard drive crash on my this Monday. I got a new hard drive through the Apple Store, had a Time Machine backup and all my other software and files appear to be fine. Except Painter. Go fig.

When I first opened Painter today, I got an Error -20, so I deleted Painter and thought it'd be a simple matter of reinstalling, plugging in my bought-and-paid-for serial number (ala copy + paste- no spaces in there, tried the serial I got without dashes (for Mac) and with (for PC)), and it'd be fixed. Except now it's telling me my serial number is invalid. I tried going through the Activation method as well as through the internet method, but it tells me my serial is still invalid. Oh, Painter was working before my HD failure too.

I'm at a loss as to what to do. Buy another? The last time I contacted support via email, I never got a response. I'll probably try again, just incase it's improved over the past year, but who knows? If anyone knows something I can do, I'd be eternally grateful for advice.

Windows 7 64 Bit - Painter 11... performing like a cow?

When I recently built an uber compter (see below for tech specs), I went with Windows 7 64 bit edition. To my dismay, Painter X did not natively install in it. So, I decided to upgrade to 11 and I am puzzled by it's horrible performance. I try to draw a simple line with the oil brush, and it takes 5-10 seconds to draw it! Now granted, I am working with a large file (16x20 inches at 300dpi... but with my stats, I would imagine that would be OK.)

Is there any setting changes to help with performance? I have already moved the scratch disk to another drive, and turned off "Enhanced Ghost Brush." I wonder, if my computer is having these problems... what kind of computer is this software designed for?

Lastly, I know that my file is huge... to those of you who have more print experience, what size should I be painting in to yield a very good quality (gallery worthy) painting with a 16x20 print?

I seem to be having a very serious problem with Painter 11. Please see the attached pics; I can no longer make the charcoal/pencil tools work correctly. This is especially evident with the pencils, as there is nearly no paper grain showing up and the pencils are acting like what seems to be watercolor paint. I have tried re-installing both my tablet drivers and Painter itself. The tablet utility shows that it is reading varying pressure, so I don't think it's the tablet. Someone please help me before I go NUTS!

Windows Vista - I cannot load new brushes(xml files) to corel painter 11

Hi.

About a day or 2 ago a went to load the extra brushes from the corel painter website. They were xml files and there are Jpegs but that's it. i read the readme text and everything and tried to load the brushes and it didn't work, every time I went to load brush library and clicked on import I'd go to load the brushes but it will say the folders are empty. I'm probably missing something so simple that only i would miss it but if anyone can give me a step by step guide of exactly how to do it, or even a video link would be appreciated. my OS is windows vista if that makes any difference.

Since upgrading the OS I cannot open painter. The message says it's corrupted. I do not have the disk and am sure it was an online download upgrade. When I purchased the imac I did the hardwire thing from the old computer transferring all info/programs to the new one. Is there a fix for this. I like painter x and would like to have it working on my mac 10.6.4. Thanks

jagged brushstrokes using impasto depth

Hello,

I'm testing the impasto brushes of Painter. I'm working on a photographic image, using only the depth of "thick acrylic bristle". I like very much the materic effect of impasto, but I get artifacts in some brushstrokes.

Basically, when the brushstrokes are angled about 45/60 degrees, the tracks of the bristles are aliased, I mean, they aren't uniform and fluid lines, but are jagged. I use a Wacom tablet.

Is not only a screen or monitor issue. When I print the image, on photographic paper or canvas, the jagged lines are there. Very small, but there are.

I tried different resolutions (150, 180, 300dpi), I tried several combinations of brush parameters (like feature or plow). Nothing.

Because I would like to use Painter for simulate materic painting, this is very important for me.

Corel Painter 12 Wish List

I figure I start a Corel Painter 12 Wish List.

I would like to see an ELLIPSE and RULER tool ( like Sketchbook Pro 2010 has ). The symmetry tools in Sketchbook Pro 2010 are very useful.

With the ELLIPSE and RULER tool you simply position the ruler or ellipse anywhere on the screen and then proceed to draw following the contour of the ruler or ellipse. This gives us nice straight and curved lines.

ArtRage Studio Pro does this even better with "Stencils" of a ruler, a french curve, a square, a rounded square, etc. You use them the same way you would on a drawing table.

Painter Brushes vs Photoshop brushes...

I love Painter and have been using it for a few years now. The only thing that I like better in Photoshop is the default round brush. I really like PS's round brush in how it builds up and its consistency when painting on layers vs the canvas. I have tried to recreate a similar brush in Painter but it just falls short...and it comes out differently when painting on a layer vs the canvas.

Is it possible in Painters vast brush settings to create a brush that behaves like the default round hard brush in PS?

I have posted this question on another forum awhile ago and all I got for an answer is that Painters brush system works differently than PS.

This is the best I have done at re-creating it in Painter:

Chalk, hard

Dab type - circular

stroke type - single

method -cover

subcat - Flat cover

opacity, set to 20%, expression pressure -> tablet

spacing 10%, min spacing 1.0, damping 50%, cubic Int points 2

well...resat 100%, bleed 0%, Dryout 222026

I have a light hand and I have set my Wacom to my pressure style. The results I get in painter when using this brush is a kind of a pooling effect when laying down several light strokes on top of another. In Photoshop the strokes are transparent and slowly build up....but in Painter they build up with a pooling effect and depending on whats underneath I get some wierd color effect.

Any help would be appreciated...thanks

Missing layers

I got corel painter 11 last weekend and i have been learning on it. I was colouring pictures in layers using Digital waterclour, saved it and went to sleep. when i got home from school and was gona continue i found out that all the layers had combined into Canvas. Any idea how to fix it?

EDIT!!!! Never mind i found out why it wasnt working and i worked out the probleme

Pen Size Shortcuts

Hey

I'm using Sketch Pad on Mac OS 10.6 Snow Leopard and i can't change the pen size with a shortcut.

The documentation says it should be [ and ] for increasing or decreasing it. Pressing alt+5 or alt+6 (german layout, dunno if that matters not quite a mac user really, trying to fix it for my girlfriend ;-)) does not effect anything.

I'm trying to make the pen size settable through the wheel on her intuos4, I could probably achieve that, if the shortcuts were working.

How to change the Color Picker Size - Painter 11

Hello,

I`m not quite sure how this feature is called in the english version.

In the german it`s the "pipette", I guess in english it`s the color picker.

Does someone know how to change the size of this color picker tool?

In default it seems to pick up just 1 pixel and I wouldlike to change this,

to get maybe a 3x3 or 5x5 pixel size.

In Photoshop you can change this easily, but in Painter I can`t find the option.

I don´t know if I am searching the wrong places all the time, but it seems to me, that there is not much "life" around Painter 11 in the web. When I look at Photoshop I can find lots of forums, tutorials, resources and a good support by Adobe. There still is no usable support offered by Corel and only very few discussions (even in this forum itself). It´s very sad, because Painters concept is great. Does anyone have some suggestions?

I lost my brush selector!

Hi all!

I'm a little stuck. I've been working on a big project in Painter 11, and had to do a lot of moving around of my various toolbars. Every once in a while, I'd accidentally undock the Brush Selector from its default position in the upper right hand corner of the Painter window. I usually remember to get it back over there, but I forgot the last time. I had manually closed all my palletes to look at my work, and I guess the brush selector must have been among them. Anyway I was happy with my piece, and closed Painter down.

Problem is, the next time I opened Painter, my Brush Selector was still gone! I went into the Window menu to check on it, and according to that menu, Brush Selector was checked. I hunted all over the place, I can't find the thing. I went to Corel's website, grabbed myself the latest patch, ran it, and started the program up again, still nothing.

Anyone have a clue what's going on here and how I can fix it? The only thing I can think to do next is to uninstall Painter and Reload, and frankly, that seems a little drastic. But I really need that toolbar back!

Any help you guys can offer would be most appreciated! Thanks!

Digital watercolor on sep layers. 3 to be exact. 4th layer is to be a chalk layer. Then as I change the variables in the Brush Ct for that Chalk layer, the 'subject' message comes up and CP is now frozen on my computer.

I have Vista. Tons of memory and hard drive space. This has never happened in CP before but I have noticed lately that it has been lagging of late.

Painter 11 Colors panel not showing HSV percentages

I am running Painter 11.0.1.42 on Windows 7. When I switch the color panel to display HSV rather than RGB, the numbers don't change to percentages. They stay at 0 to 255, same as RGB. Am I missing a patch? Painter 10 used to show the percentages to the right of the picker but that's gone and is replace with the clone switch.

I searched the forum and found a post on 9 January by a Jinny Brown who says the displayed numbers should change to percentages when you pick HSV. However the screen shot that she attached clearly shows that they don't.

Pro illustrators: How many of you use BOTH Painter & Photoshop?

Up to recently, I considered myself mostly a writer and an illustrator on the side. Then a friend strong-armed me into entering an illustrator portfolio showcase at the Society of Children's Book Writers & Illustrators conference, and I won two awards. One was a runner-up to first prize overall (there were two runners-up) and one was a Mentorship award, which meant I got to have a 15-minute intense portfolio discussion with each of six industry pros, back to back.

During the mentorship sessions, several said that I should learn Photoshop because it's the industry standard in illustration and because it does a lot of things that Painter can't. Because I only had 15 minutes with each mentor, I chose not to pursue with more questions re: computer software.

Photoshop is an expensive program, however, and I'm doing some research before I make the investment. A question for all you pro illustrators: do you use BOTH Painter and Photoshop? If so, why? What does Photoshop do that Painter can't?

Since I won the awards, I've been approached by two children's book publishers about doing picture books, so I'm very excited! Also nervous, though, wondering how quickly I need to learn Photoshop.
