Re: Error: 18 and Painter 11 will not launch in Leopard 10.5.6

    Thank you Mig,

I have a Time Machine back up only on my Mac Pro (where P11 works..hope until now)

Last weeks I worked hard on my mac book pro using only version X after lot of crashes with 11 (especially during a seminar...it was really fun...): I'd probably continue to use the old version until the patch will come as a light.

A posible solution for this specific problem (error 18) has been found here:

Well, I found a workaround too, and it's a bit simple, we can use it until the patch become available (for Intel Macs only).

In Finder, choose Corel Painter 11 application and get info (cmd+i). Select "Open using Rosetta", so it will re-write all the registration files.

Then launch Painter. It will ask you for the registration, I don't know if it is really necessary to register at this time (I did), but if you do, Painter will open normally.

So you can quit and you must disable "Rosetta" option, because you will loose performance using it. Then it will rewrite files again, register again, and all will work fine.

Here is the steps to clarify:

    1 - Enable Rosetta and launch Painter;

    2 - Quit Painter and disable Rosetta;

3 - Relaunch Painter, register and it's done.

    Hope it helps.

robinson.sampa I want to thank you for this fix, even if it is a work-around kluge - it works! I bought this upgrade months ago and it immediately went south on me with the notorious error 18 message. I dealt with Corel techs for weeks until I got tired of their useless suggestions and they got tired of me haranguing them for a fix or refund. I gave up and figured I'd just been scammed out of a couple hundred dolares. But now, the app works. Thanks again.

This fix worked for me (Mac OSX 10.5.7) so far. Thanks to everyone who contributed ideas.

But you'd think Corel could have been more up front about the 'Error 18' problem. It's probably cost me a couple of grand in lost work because of the error. Corel better sharpen up or our clients will simply ask us to use different tools to ensure we meet their deadlines.

    Thanks robinson.sampa.
I was at my wits end having just purchased Corel Painter 11 for my Imac (10.5.7.), I worked with it successfully for about 4 hours before it did an <Error18>.  I removed everything Corel, re-installed Painter 10 from a disk,  and tried again - from a downloaded version. Still no joy till I tried your
work-around, and it worked. I used my serial number/purchase key and it was accepted.  At least it has to date - about 5 hours since I read your post.

However, it leaves me a bit nervous that a product like this could be so unstable. I've worked with several major graphics products over the years with many upgrades and never come across anything like this before. Frankly I'm a bit apphrehensive now. It's certainly taken the initial enthusiasm out of me.

Thank you for a straight forward solution.

I have tried this Rosetta fix and it works only until you start the machine again. Sometimes if will work until two restarts. It is very unpredictable when the error 18 message will appear. I wonder if you have to keep doing this fix or is it a one off?

I spoke to Corel and the case is closed as far as they are concerned.

After a week or so of telephone calls to Corel and trying the Rosetta fix to have the error 18 reoccur a day later, I received a final email from Corel with their solution:

    quote:

'We would just like to inform you that as of this moment our product development team is still working on a fix for this issue you are encountering with Painter 11. Please be advised that Corel cannot provide a resolution for this right away since not all customers are encountering this error.'

Apparently, since not all customers are getting the error 18 message, it is not important to Corel, I was told later on the telephone by the same Corel Product Support Specialist. When I asked 'what to do next?' as I am trying to maintain a profession -  with this program as part of the art producing tool; support has said there is nothing they can do.

What has been forgotten is that I spent a few hundred dollars on this program which has never worked and received nothing in return yet.

I am sorry for you if the workaround did not fix your Painter, but believe me, I know that the Corel guys consider it important and they are actively working in a patch for the error 18.

    Thank you.

I actually received another email from Corel support saying just that!

I have to say that although there have been many phone calls and emails after weeks, all of the support staff at Corel have been patient, courteous and pleasant. I had read a few times on forums that Corel support was bad, but I have to disagree.

I had a similar issue with Painter X two weeks ago and within days it was fixed with a new CD version download rather than the trial activation. All the support team have helped as much as they could.

I'll follow their lead and also be patient and courteous.

If you can help it don't restart. After running the Rosetta fix if you restart you will be set back to having to use the rosetta. At least this has been the case with my MBP OS X.5.8.

How many of you that are experiencing this issue hadn't installed the trial?

What is the best way to uninstall?

Re: Error: 18 and Painter 11 will not launch in Leopard 10.5.6

I have the same issue with Painter, as many others do. I've been using Painter since version one point something. It's been an outstanding product. But the response so far from Painter software engineers, or least the persons fielding that issue, is completely at odds with what we have come to admire so much in the product and its developers. I can't say this more clearly, but if the issue is not addressed then your core customer base are just going to give up on Painter, as it's just not commercially practical to support a product like this with such a serious shortcoming. Regardless of what I think, you should take this more seriously than the weak response of 'it doesn't effect all users'. You clearly don't understand the industry your product is used in. One user is typically part of a much wider group of design professionals. Of course it effects everyone. The designer, art director, creative director, account director, and client. Their simple response to the Painter problem is 'don't use it'. That window closes. It's very hard to reopen it. Corel needs to pay attention.

    Hi Mode,

I only wish to convey to you my experience in this matter.

At one time I was running Painter X on Tiger, then upgraded to Leopard only to learn that PX would not launch no matter what I tried.  However, a PF poster came to my rescue.  The solution was to do an Erase and Install of Leopard then re-install PX and it has worked perfectly since.  Granted, this is not a simple 'workaround'.  You do have to BU your entire HD and then re-install all of your apps (Migration Mgr is the key here).  This may not be true in your case, but I had always wanted to do an Erase and Install because I would begin afresh from a known state.  You may not see it as such.

Anyway, I know the frustration you feel as I've been there before.

    Best of luck to you

    Regards,
    Phillip Anthony
