Is the variant at default settings?
There is a brush trick which can introduce an impression (based on the luminosity of the pattern) of the currently selected pattern in the brush stroke for some of the variants. Just off the top of my head, are you using an approximately square selection to bound the 'dab' image prior to capture, and have you tried increasing the brush size in Painter after capturing the dab, then resaving the variant at the size you require?
Note also that there used to be a bug in Painter, whereby if an existing captured dab ...

I'm guessing that the Squeeze value on your pre-capture starting variant was significantly less than 100%.
Go to Windows menu> Brush Control ...
