So, while trying out David's Brush, I noticed that OPACITY expression for these brushes is set on SOURCE. Changing that seems to fix the problem (and now the problem makes sense), but I am not sure why these brushes had Source as a default setting...

Just off the top of my head, are you using an approximately square selection to bound the 'dab' image prior to capture, and have you tried increasing the brush size in Painter after capturing the dab, then resaving the variant at the size you require?
Note also that there used to be a bug in Painter, whereby if an existing captured dab ...
I created a dab but it's squished... Is there a setting to fix this? I want it to be that wide but it's not co-operating with me >.>
I'm guessing that the Squeeze value on your pre-capture starting variant was significantly less than 100%.
